I've been wondering this as well.
Sometimes I see my opponent and the host be red right after me and my opponent got a comm error, before they go back to being green.

Don't quote me, but I believe it's to do with packet loss and who's side it is, like if they're red, they're having packet loss, even if the connection shows a solid 5 bars, there will still be lag in game.

I had suspicions that the Comm Errors are packet related, so your theory lines up with that theory of mine.

Left is the actual ping connection
Right is FPS
If you're both experiencing different FPS, it goes red
