Im not certain if you have to have completed the Cell saga what if with Vegeta. But i dont think so. Beating Kid Trunks should be enough,
I tried it as you said and it worked like that. I thought the system was the same as the other what if choices I had made. For example, like Trunks' question, whether to stay in the present or return to the future. You can see that the first time I beat Trunks as a child very quickly and in the following ones I didn't.
