the anime looks so old. And there is so much talking which goes more than 1 episode instead of action in comparison to new animes. But maybe I should give it a try. Would you start with Dragonball oder Dragonball Z?
I mean that's pretty much all shounen anime tbh. You have to realize DB was one of the gigantic juggernauts in that era. It set the bar for a lot of future anime, A LOT.
Both are great for different reasons. Dragonball is much more adventure focused, a journey. Z is much more fight focused. But if you watch Z, i'd recommend Dragonball Kai. It's basically Z without the filler.
if you played the story modes in those games, you have the basis of DBZ. DBS isn’t necessary to keep up with, it’s just a bunch of extra forms and characters
I'd still recommend watching the anime though, at least Super if you're a newcomer and want to get into the series further.
if you don't like dragonball you wont like this game. the combat is extremely fast paced just like in the show.
if you're wanting to watch the anime:
Dragonball is when he's a kid. It focuses on comedy, adventure, and explanation of the world. It's not necessary to watch, but it does introduce the characters, only important if you care about things like "whose the pig?"
Dragonball Z: action oriented that focuses on ever increasing amounts of power and stakes, most popular for the high intensity fights. If you don't like the graphics, check out Dragonball Kai, which is just Remastered for Z.
Dragonball Super: Latest series with the best graphics. It strikes a balance between the comedy and whimsy of Dragonball with the extreme fights of Z. Power scaling becomes crazy, so it depends on how much you appreciate that.
Dragonball GT: This goes back to the whimsy and comedy/adventure of Dragonball, theres less fights than Z but the fights you do have are of extreme intensity. The selling point here is that it focuses on characters that you didn't get to explore in Z (or even Super): Trunks and Pan.
And personally, I look at it like this:
Dragonball is the story of Goku, as he grows up and decides his own views on the world.
Dragonball Z is the story of Gohan (Goku's kid), as he grows up and comes to terms with the way the world truly is and the importance of fighting to protect.
Dragonball GT is the story of Pan (Gohan's kid) as she explores the galaxy with her grandpa (Goku, turned into a kid for plot reasons), she gets to learn about the past, the history of the Saiyans and her family while taking you (the audience) on a journey never before experienced as we finally leave Earth and explore the greater galaxy.
Dragonball Super is the story of the Dragonball Pantheon, exploring the Gods of the various universes, using Goku as the vehicle by which we (the audience) experience this new expanse.
