Mods installed, what happens if I play online?

Will I be ok as long as I use completely un-modded characters? I imagine playing as a moded character would be a huge no no.

Or should I remove all mods and go online with none installed?

Cosmetic mods are not a problem since they are only visible for you. Modded character and/or skills I wouldnt use outside of private lobbies with friends.
Any competitive advantage in ranked and getting reported most likely will get you in trouble. Game itself has no anti cheat at the moment so you wont receive instant bans for using mods.

nothing, 9 outta 10 times youll just get a comms error depending on the mod anyway

u get a warning for frist time offence and kicked from matches
