Scouter?

I saw someone say that scouters have a smaller range of detection when searching for opponents if it gets knocked off or broken during a match. If the scouter is still on you, the character will detect with the same range as any other character.

Is this mechanic in the game? If so, what happens if I play as Raditz (or any scouter character) and choose to unequip the scouter before the start of the match. Does my detection range start off small, or does it stay the same as regular ki sense characters throughout the entire match?

You won't get a blue position if you can't detect ki, but you can lose anyone if they're out of sight too long. Some characters have better ki detection than others.
