Pray you get there first, wait 5 minutes before going in, try to pay attention to how many people go to each location and go to the one with fewer people.
It's a pretty big flaw in the game currently that there's only so many spawns per location so you can literally end up coming in right behind someone and they'll just turn around and kill you as you come out the airlock.
As others mentioned - either get in the raid first if you plan to go to a raid, or be patient and go in a bit late. If you're first then no player can attack you when you're in the airlock. Being first means you can often fight with a few bots and get a mission or two done, or quickly loot a few locations, and then get out before anyone else gets to you. If you're late then other players will have engaged with bots, or each other, and already gone to some of the mission locations.
Yeah, raider mode risks none of your own gear so it's a great way to learn the basics.
Running regular matches using only the free stuff from the rustbucket is also a zero equipment risk situation and what I usually recommend for new players for their first few matches if they worry about losing stuff.
Honestly one of the best pieces of advice I can give is this - don't succumb to gear fear. Get in there, have fun, use whatever gear you want to use, and if you lose it - don't worry. You will get more stuff.
Diddn't know there was a different mode hiding behind the main one.
Very nice and useful to know
Though the cool down's a bit of a let down...
Raider mode is very new and it's a work in progress. If you want to provide feedback head over to https://discord.gg/marauders and make a post in #suggestions-feedback.
To me it seems like players are meant to run a regular match or two in between doing Raider mode matches.
If you are in a team and happen to die early in a regular match you can also opt to run a Raider mode match instead of just sitting around waiting for your team to come out of the match they're playing. Raider matches are pretty short so you should be able to finish one before your team extracts (or dies...).
It very much depends on the POI (Point of interest) or raid location if you will, for instance COLONY CRUISER is basically a deathmatch in a small cage with cheese in the middle and more often than not, unless you board the ship by escape-pod, you should basically expect company at your airlock.
Other raid locations are less 'compact' like Terraformer or Prison where the likelihood of your airlock being camped is somewhat smaller but by no means improbable.
How to deal with airlock campers you may ask? I'd strongly recommend smoke grenades or at the very least flashbangs but smoke seems to work better for me assuming the airlock I'm trying to escape isn't leading straight out into a large open room with no cover to speak of, however since both of those grenades can only be crafted after doing several if not a dozen or so "core contracts" (Zero to Hero) I'm afraid the best you can do is take cover behind the barrels or crates in the airlock itself and simply try to 'shoot' your way out.
Now as for how not to get killed all too soon after you actually leave the airlock alive, sound is how you detect/locate others or bots, typically bots will 'tread' in a particular pattern like going back and forth not shy about making noise, noises that do indicate some 'shyness' are more than likely a player in close proximity so basically if you want to succeed you really shouldn't be blasting tunes or similar (unless dying is not a big deal for you at the time).
Learning the maps is also a huge factor into whenever you're going to succeed or not and you can really only learn the maps by simply playing the game, although there are some community made maps of the various raids etc. somewhere out there which can be helpful.
Regarding to getting 'fat loot', I'd strongly suggest that you unlock the lockpick crafting recipe and bring 1-3 of those into a raid for the purposes of unlocking security/armory rooms which tends to have their doors locked but more importantly the lockpicks are for the large yellow circular containers with various crafting materials and a decent chance at a blowtorch, the blowtorch you use to crack open vaults with and if you're very careful when using the blowtorch, you can open up to 4 vaults per blowtorch but there is a good chance you'll probably die before getting to use the whole thing anyway so just worry about getting the vault open in a hurry before someone shoots you in the back.
Lastly learning what each gun sounds like when fired is also very helpful, whenever the opposition are using big guns or small guns, 'low-tier' guns or 'top-tier' and while some guns may very well sound the same but I can assure you that each and every gun has it's own unique sound.
I'd strongly recommend new players to use the Stengun with the stock and compensator (compensators for Stenguns available at lvl 2 with Kingdom Alliance), with those 2 attachments it basically has no recoil and while it doesn't do much damage, it is however very easy to land headshots given how low the recoil is, the Mat-49 isn't half bad either, however it has more recoil than the stengun while having a higher firing rate.
If all else fails, you can always just be a 'hermit' in space picking up lootboxes from debris fields (coffin like containers with a blinking red light) which can occasionally give you some good loot or at the very least medical supplies and crafting materials, just gotta keep an eye out for others doing the same as they'll no doubt try to disable your ship and kill you.
The ignorance is astounding.
Easy anti cheat.
Looter shooter
You guy haven't played tarkov with entire maps being totally off limits to non cheaters.
Ahh why do i bother.
