There are no character skills to lose like when you die in Hunt: Showdown, for example.
All crafting recipes are unlocked based on your account level so they're not affected if you die. All trader reputation is tied to completing raid missions and those rep levels do not change if you die. All unlocked cosmetics remain unlocked if you die as well. Any prestige unlocks, prestige tokens, and skill points are retained as is your main inventory, any other ships you had in your hangar, and your cash.
Dying can seem frustrating at first but once you get used to the game you'll learn how easy it can be to gear back up. Ships and equipment are pretty easy to obtain so it's not that hard to replace things when you die. If you play in a team your team mates will often recover some of your gear for you (and will drop it for you at the beginning of the next match) if they survive and extract, they can also fly your ship out and it become theirs but that way it's not lost.
There's some basic gear available for free in the Rustbucket ship that spawns every match, and there are four vendors that rotate but they each sell decent equipment at fairly reasonable prices.
