There's some room for "echo-correction"
You can hear footsteps from what is basically 4 rooms ahead when the room is next to the one you're in, but is connected by a longer corridor/stair section.
My bigger gripe is that vertical audio is extremely misleading. People above or below you sound like they're on the same floor even through several feet of rock or steel.
I totally understand that footsteps right above, or below you, could be confused for next to you, because everything is metal basically, and echos are weird.
but i should never be confused about which floor my opponent is on if he is 15 feet to my left. I should either not hear the steps at all because of the floor difference, or i should be able to tell the difference between approaching footsteps in my hallway, or if it's the hallway under me.
