MP is stable and runs fine with 10 people. There's also our new multiplayer surveyor where you can edit and drive with friends.
The fact that we're still around after 20+ years of development suggests that the quality of the product outweighs the supposed greed.
You can also experience everything that Trainz has to offer with one of our Trainz Plus memberships - both currently on sale. That will set you back $5 to find out for yourself.
Such is the nature of sims. If I could pay $70 + $10 a month for all of DCS's content I'd consider it a steal. I'm guessing it has to do with the lower amount of buy-ins than triple A games, but almost all quality sims are priced higher than regular games. If there were a way to offer all this content at a significantly lower price, while still making a good profit, someone would have come along and done it. Frankly the $10 a month option seems better to me than the dovetail option of having to buy everything at ~$25 a pop.
people are doing it! support indi devs! sims are my jam. this is not my first rodeo.
there is no possible way you can justify their price point and business practices to me. go price out everything. most of the dlc is broken and out of date. its not all created equal. the prices are artificially high. now why would that be?? so they can charge you the 10$ monthly!! look at the quality of 3rd party assets and their price points. i think dove tail is awful to! they have had little to no competition, thats changing. im not trying to be disrespectful but wise up stranger. just because its they way things are does not make it acceptable.
You can't honestly consider this game on par with DCS? If this sim were even half the quality of DCS I would agree with you. However, it is not , so the price is to much for a game that has this many flaws. It needs much improvement before I consider the answer to the question "Is it worth buying" is a yes from me. It is about the value of for the money, and you may not agree with me, but it is not worth it. It is the same game as the previous ones. The monthly just makes the high entry price even more laughable.
Consider this. DCS devs put in hundreds of thousands of hours to make the DLC content they provide work as "similar" to the real thing. While doing this they provide full fidelity models with little to no bugs. Trainz team has SIMPLY CARRIED OVER the DLC content and the whole game for that matter (from what I can tell). I feel sorry that I had a part in enabling Trainz because I wanted to give them a second chance. I wont make that mistake again, and I will do everything in my power to inform those that are considering the game of the shortcomings.
The majority of DLC packs available through the Steam store are created by members of the Trainz community like yourself. The look and features will vary as each creator will have their own preferences for the content that they make. We have improved the reviewing of new DLCs in the last 2-3 years so as to improve the quality of these, however we also allow creators to make to their own style/preferences so long as it doesn't cause issues for the player.
The prices on all DLC packs made by 3rd party creators are set by the creator of those DLC packs. In fact, there's been a few DLC packs recently that we've specifically suggested to creators to lower their prices as we felt that the price they originally requested would not have worked.
Content creators for Trainz also put hundreds, sometimes thousands, of hours of work into their content to make it look the best they can and work as realistically as possible. This includes many hours of beta testing, reviewing, and bug fixing before release. That is for both builtin routes in Trainz (most of which are also made by members of the community), and DLC routes. As well as the many thousands of freeware assets that are available...
Each new release of Trainz builds upon previous releases. This is how Trainz has continued for over 20 years now, and allows us to continue to create new features and functions without needing to re-do the same work we did a few years earlier.
For TRS22 we have added several new features, some of which were offered in the TRS19 Platinum Edition (which is not available on Steam), but which weren't in the original TRS19 edition. However a bigger focus was on content, both the included routes and sessions (which included several new or upgraded locomotives and rolling stock assets), as well as a large range of 'stock' model assets that we have included for people to use in making their own routes.
As to DLC packs, for us to release a new version of Trainz on Steam we have to re-list each DLC pack for that new version, otherwise users of the new version would not be able to access those DLC packs in the new version. However if you already own a DLC pack for, say, TRS19 then you will automatically have access to that DLC pack in TRS22 or TrainzPlus as they are interlinked. You won't need to purchase the DLC pack again. Unfortunately Steam makes it very hard for us to show this, due to their marketing requirements.

let me sum it up.
"we have no control over our product."
"if its broken its not our fault, if it cost to much its not our fault."
"yes we get a cut"
"we cant be bothered"
are you guys a team of two?? how can you work on the same product for 15 years and this is where you are? not to mention if you guys didnt make all that jank DLC then you must have lots of free time. i do not approve. your answers change nothing.
The other option would be to either make you re-buy those DLC packs for each release, or just simply not offer your previously purchased DLC packs in newer releases.
I'm not sure either of those are good options. Instead the DLC packs do get carried over so that DLCs you purchased in a previous version are also available for you in the new version. And for new players, they can access those DLC packs in the latest version if they wish to do so. As far as I'm aware, there's no locomotive or rolling stock DLC packs that don't work; and there's no routes that fail to load, however it's possible that the sessions included in some routes may have issues in newer versions, especially in very old DLC packs.
However maintaining and updating the DLC packs is up to the creator of the DLC pack. We provide the ability for them to submit updates as they need to, and these get processed by us as we get to them in the queue. If major issues are reported to us directly (ie via our helpdesk) for a DLC pack, and the creator refuses to update it, then we may need to remove the DLC pack from sale.
This is no different to games sold on Steam. Steam won't update the game, the creator of the game needs to update it. If it doesn't get updated, then it may get removed from sale.
And yes, we are quite a small team. It'd be worth taking a look at the credits in TRS22 (found under 'file' on the launch screen). Note that under 'Content', those who have their username in brackets are 3rd party creators who have provided content included in TRS22, and are not staff.

So if you really want to create your own scenarios its a great game... but if you are in it for the train driving.. Get your big wallet out or buy a different sim.
Outside of purchasing Trainz itself, it is not necessary to purchase anything else. There are hundreds of thousands of free assets available to download either via the Download Station (keeping in mind the free server is speed limited), or from the hundreds of 3rd party websites that host their own content.

The user Revan has not been banned by us, so I'm not sure where you are getting that from...
Please consider this an only warning that attacks, in particular on the Trainz community as a whole and our team aren't going to be welcomed by us either, and if your only contributions to this are going to be to attack our team, then we may need to make that decision.
