Solved Two Mysteries and now Stuck

Can't find anything to open any of the doors? Are there keys? A wrench? A knife? If so where? I see what looks like a wrench under sand but it's not interactive.

I'm also stuck here. It's really unclear what there is to do and whether you can progress...

Figured it out!! You have to solve the Sudden Troubles mystery from the notebook in the mess hall and then you get the ability to grab the wrench. It's not clear at all.

OK, solved that mystery and another and need to get to the engine room. How do I do that?

oh this was helpful thank you, i was running round thinking i was blind to finding required objects! plus it says a knife is needed for the other door next to the hatch you use the wrench, there are floating knives in the kitchen and yet can't pick them up.....seriously!
