Can't figure out how to use the grappling hook.

I can grab it, but there's no indication on how to use it. If I throw it without putting it in my backpack first, I'm screwed because there's no save button and I'm not seeing any instructions past pick it up.

Just throw it up under hand close to the log and it will go around the log. Then grab the rope and start climbing.

How do you climb DOWN with the grappling hook?

I am at the top and want to go down. I cannot figure out how to attach the hook from the top. I'm standing on a projecting log right beside the place where you throw the grappling hook from below to climb up, but when I throw the hook at this place, it simply drops to below. If I just drop it onto the log it also just falls to below.

PC version.

I know I'm being stupid, but hey. How's this achieved?

hello people. when using the grappling hook, forget common sense and how it should work in real life. look the words, where it says to use the grappling hook. that little box in the air in the areas where you can use it. grab the grappling hook, extend it out till the words become green, then toss the grappling hook lightly in any direction. to use the line to climb up and down, extend hand to the line and wait for it to give you the option to hold trigger and activate, then just wait for the circle to complete and teleport up or down.
also, if your in the tutorial, with mia in the camp doing the story, you have to actually pull yourself up it so you can fall. this works for all the others as well, the grappling gun and climbing gear as well. for the climbing gear its easy, for the gun its easy as well, but the hook that you have to throw can be off putting till you get the hang of it.

you cant lose the grappling hook even if you throw it away from you it will always be in your pack

the trick with the grapping hook is you dont use it on the red leafed log that has the grappling hook required marker

you use it on the branch next to and above the red leaf log that has the grappling hook required marker

so if you are standing on that log that says grappling hook required and you want to climb down, look to your right or left about head height and you hook the grappling hook onto that, that way you can just reach over and go down it like a firepole, if you are under it you can just throw it straight up and you'll see it kinda auto aim and snap to the log
