As I understand it, the 'penetration' value has a 90% chance of penetrating 1/10th it's value in armor class.
So 20 pen has a 90% chance of doing damage through class-2 armor, 30 pen has a 90% chance of penetrating class-3 armor, etc.
Also, the higher the fragility, the fewer shots the armor can take. 50+ is generally only good for ~4 shots, and protection may or may not be effected by current durability %, though I'm not sure.
As an aside, I imagine this is a rough game for ironman...
Can't wait till you get killed by the invisible, bugged, stuck-in-wall enemies..
Even at high levels there's a not-inconsiderable chance of having 2 bullets plow straight through your armor and kill your run in half a second. It's rare, but still...more fun to be daring every once in a while than play it safe 100% of the time anyway.
no one armor could save your life if you was shot by >30 bullets per second. buy armor piercing bullets, NV (1 lvl is fine, 2 is garbage, 3 is very good), loot 20+ damage and 600+ rpm rifle (much better with supressor!!!!!!!) and go on hunt at night so you see them but they don't see YOU. shoot them before they shoot you.
ECM + NV + supressor + armor piercing = win.
zz vel + NV + armor piercing = imba.
against animals: take second gun with 900+ rpm, 50+ magazine and super cheep ammo just to shoot off all kind of beasts before they run and bite you. no armor need for that. F90 is good!
lazers on both guns are very useful!
Buckshot, aim for the head, and you can one-shot wolves/ghouls/boars/blinks.
boulder>>n153>spas>toz>sawn-off
n153 is fine but the low mag cap (and the extremely low-range) is an achilles heel in this game.
Honestly preferred using a sniper rifle against unarmored (animal) targets and a high-rof high-pen against armored humans, vs vice versa.
and again a 5 hour run downed by stupid wolfes.. lol.. sneaking around a house and exaclty there right next to me when im tumbling around the corner..6 or more wolfes. no chance. -.-
i rly like this game but thats on reason why no one should it play on hardcore. the pure speed of the wolfes is crazy hmpf. i never get out of the stupid forest :-(
Just stay away from the extreme western edge of that northern yard and it should be fine.
Only times I've *had* to fight animals was when they were nesting at the extraction zone, and even then I'd just turn around and go to the other extract if needed.
I play rather slowly and pay really close attention to where I'm going.
But sometimes it seems to me as if the recognition range of the animals is extremely high.
Sometimes I go around a rock and am attacked because theyr animals hiding behind.
Or I defend myself against something, go backwards and get attacked by a boar or wolf....
I try for a week to survive a little longer.... But something always messes me the run. in most cases its an animal. (Against everything else there are armors that work so quite well)
The problem is not that you are often attacked by them. The problem is that when they get too close you are 100% dead. The pure speed from the critters is a reason why its so hard.
anyway. seems like I'm just not good enough yet :-P
but i will try again..and again! i will make it! :)
try listening soud of animals. like wolfs do "AWOOO", blinks and ghouls growls and do sound of steps like humans. play with a headset))
A bit of careful planning should prevent that latter situation too- if it's just some little camp, you should establish your escape route with just a small peek on either side of your route of approach- make a safe quadrant you should be good to retreat into. For larger bases you can scout around the whole perimeter a screen and a half before going in.
Point is, look before you go somewhere, don't go blind or let yourself be taken by surprise.
You've gotta be ***really*** on top of this if you want to play hardcore mode, which is why it might be more fun to not do so.
And I'm not joking about those bugged-out invisible enemies, when you start entering structures you'll find out quick. Bring extra bandages.
