Just a general, from memory, reference:
1. Subsonic ammo will have reduced penetration and improved recoil. This is useless ammo I do not even pick up at the moment
2. High flash damage ammo that has reduced penetration but it deals increased damage, for example HP or FMJ types. This ammo is best to use when dealing with non-human enemies such as ghouls or blinks as they seem not to have armor
3. High penetration ammo will have increased armor penetration but deal less damage and have increased recoil, examples are M61, BT or BP. This is ammo to be used when you deal with human enemies, especially those wearing armor. You can see this when NPC has helmet on. Only human enemies that do not have significant armor are basic bandits as far as I can tell.
My success in the game stemmed from banking AP rounds then wiping out Lazar's band of bandits, taking his AS VAL, then easily dominating the game from there.
Yes, the moment you are able to safely kill Lazar and his guards, you will not have issues with money and gear. You will also be able to farm decent attachments. Be warned that this makes the game significantly easier and lot less interesting because there would be very little for your to loot & use. ZZ Vel is best weapon in the game that uses best ammo, which you can still buy from army vendor every day.
