Why Won't My Guns Take Different Versions of the Same Ammo?

First off, I'm not a gun person but I get the basics. But I also haven't encountered this problem in other games similar to this, like Tarkov. So it feels to me like a bug, but correct me if I'm wrong.

All my guns in Sievert seem to take only one sub-type of ammunition. Like of course they can only take one caliber, lets say 5.45x39 for example, and the gun will say that on it's tool tip, etc. But if I have 5.45x39 HP, and I try to load it, it will say "no 5.45x39 PS found".

I've tried this with fully emptied magazines, I've tried taking magazines out and putting them back in in case it's stuck for some reason. All the guns seem to not accept anything but one specific kind. Which is weird because the guns and magazines don't say they only accept PS or something, they only show the caliber. Further when you pick up the gun, ALL of the ammo of that caliber lights up green like it's compatible - but it's not.

Is this broken or am I just 0 IQ?

ESC > Settings > Controls > Y-Change Ammo.

Press Y, scroll the mouse to highlight the ammo you want, press Y again.

If -Y- is your Ammo Selector,
then use -Y- (followed by mouse scroll, then -Y- again) to select the highlighted ammo you want to use, the weapon will unload previous ammo selection and reload with the new selection.

If -R- is your Ammo Reloader,
then -R- will reload that weapon (with the ammo you selected with -Y-).
Thankfully, ammo selection saves, so you only have to do it once.

Im pretty sure what OP asks for is the ability to load multiple types(same caliber) of ammo into same mag, not how to switch ammo type.
I like the suggestion, good QoL if devs will consider it.

Have run into the bug several times as well where if you try to switch the ammo type when you run out of the ammo type you were currently using that it won't load the new ammo type you are attempting to switch it to.

Nah I meant switch. But really, that's good too.

It'll just get you killed that your character just won't put in whatever they have when they press R. I get the idea of why not, but I'd rather have any ammo in there than none.

Also since this wasn't clear in game I threw out a looted P90 because it wouldn't take the only ammo of the caliber I had access to buying. RIP.

At the very least, when you hover over the weapon the tool tip should say what variant its set too.

Just as a heads-up related to this topic: You also can't change ammo when all of your backpack slots are filled (probably because the game tries to unload the gun first and needs a free inventory space for it).

"Not a gun person" that's fine, not everyone's an ammo-sexual. Doesn't hurt to ask for help.

As far as I'm aware you can press B to toggle the fire mode on some firearms. Which will also tell you what ammo you have loaded in your current magazine. If you have more than one type of ammo in your pack pressing Y will let you know which ammo is in the weapon and tell you if you can swap it out for other ammo.

Double clicking y on the keyboard helped me solve this issue.
