Is KBD something I need to learn?
Im new to tekken and I was wondering if KBD is still a skill that I must learn to be competitive. If any experienced tekken players know the answer please let me know cause I'm debating if I should learn it or not.

Edit: Thank you all for the great discussion down below and all the advice given. it's been really helpful!

It's something you can practice while you are playing once you get have got an idea from labbing it. Basically just be doing it during matches and it will sink in.

Is it something you need to learn as a fresh tekken player, no, not really. There is so much more basic stuff you need to know first.

In Tekken 8, you don't have to learn KBD if you're new. They made backdash recovery much faster so beginners can just smash back back commands and get some sort of KBD like movement. It's not as fast as KBD but it will do for a beginner level.

Just go learn it, it doesn't even take long, most players can start getting a KBD within days and Master it within a month or two.

You can definitely play without having to learn that, especially while you're new and fighting against other low rank players. I'd say there are a lot of more important skills to learn.

Once you start getting better at the game and good spacing becomes necessary then it may come in handy.

You can get a decent backdash with a bit of practice, just try it vs cpu in the demo with any controller or the keyboard.
Do a backdash, cancel the animation with diagonal and follow with another backdash, once you get the timing it's easy.

Eventually yeah, but honestly sidestep into KBD~block is mostly all you will ever need in game. KBD is useful for creating space out of opponents range, forcing whiffs, and most importantly staying in your characters ideal range. Normal back dash can also achieve all of this but may open less opportunities for easier punishes. Also in general normal back dash has been buffed in 8 (as of demo) with less recovery before next back dash can be input, so you get backwards faster by KBD but the distance covered is only about 1 second faster. I would start with learning dash blocking before anything honestly, much more immediately useful.

If you really want to become a counter hit (counter hits have been nerfed in 8 by the way) fisher king then by all means give yourself carpal tunnel KBDing and wave dashing everywhere. Everyone has goals.
its a good investment later on at middle to high brackets. as for now just go ham and try to have fun first
It's something you can pick up as you get faster, and with micro stepping KBD and KWD will come naturally with more efficient practice.

But if you don't have the schedule then practicing KBD can be useful for building dexterity.

well if you don't learn KBD you'll have to keep doing sidestep into backstep and call that movement lol

microstep is also pretty effective.

It's a terrible "mechanic" don't bother.

It is not. Microstepping over and over at the incorrect ranges will get you clipped over and over. You want a good KBD at later levels- It is not imperative as a new player.

That's true, it is a higher level experience MU use more than a practice in round thing.

But starting the practice before the fight in the waiting room (the grid) should be efficient enough.

And by 500 some hrs online, should be safe enough to use effectively with the acquired MU with defense fuzzy and neutral options.

online KBD is pretty irrelevant

i was beating people up in high ranks long before i learned KBD , and even after i learned KBD i never considered it a main reason for my wins
Yes so you can use it to hold yourself above others in the forums

As a Tekken competitor since 2005

Back Dash, Side Step, Back Dash...
Forward Dash, Side Step, Forward Dash...

Are good enough alternatives to use since Tekken 5. You can definitely get out of pools in a really high level tournament without KBD. Enjoy the game and learn all the nerd stuff when ever you feel like it.
