honest question, trying to figure out this game and starting to become hopeless.
im trying to learn tekken 8 have not played tekken sense tekken 4. Are there any characters with 10 frame startup launchers? ive tried to learn 3 different characters and every time I get into a fight it feels like who ever im up against has a ten frame launcher attack to start a combo but everyone I have tried to learn all their combo starters are all 12 or 15+ frame startups for the first attack.

am I just picking crappy characters and handicapping myself? or am I missing something with asuka, victor and raven?

I dont want to throw in the towel trying to learn this game but its getting to the point that im just having to wait for the other player to miss time a guard or drop a combo for me to have an opportunity to do anything.

No, there are no 10f launchers in the game but many launchers have high crush properties and win against 10frames jabs.

Get a game without launchers.

Are there any better starter characters I should be learning the game with? I constantly loose controle when trading or trying to get frame advantage when using moves that give me +3 or +5 frames on block, idk what I'm looking for in practice to find what moves are best for certain situations.

It's ok to lose and there is no better character to learn Tekken than one making you lose the most.

Every failure is a learning opportunity. You may pick strong character and be carried but you will end up like all those noctis, Leroy's and kunimitsus from Tekken 7 - food for more expirienced players.

You need instead to learn fundamentals of the game, analyze replays of your list match and see where you made mistake and where you can improve and for some things you just need nothing but time spent playing.

What you say is fair that's why I've been sticking with character that I think just look cool and like the style of their attacks. But when it comes to learning where my mistakes are made idk what I'm looking at. I know curtain attacks have special attributes with them but idk how they interact with each other or their over all impact when it comes to punishing or starting a combo. I've gone down many rabbit holes trying to find guides and tips on YouTube. But when I learn something I'll have trouble trying to implement them into a fight. I guess that's why I'm curious of what fighters have what feels like combo starters that come out as fast as a 10 frame jab does for who I'm playing.

I don't want to blame the game I know it has to be user error some where but when trying to figure out where my user error is its like trying to learn greek.

Do you understand how frame data works?

I thought I started to understand it after watching a few videos but in practice the math behind it started to not make sence. I havnt seen that video tho so I'll be watching that today. Thank you

You are welcome. And you always welcome to ask specific questions on the forum if you have something in particular that you don't understand, and in Tekken there are hundreds of such things, but learning them over time and seeing yourself improving is a big part of fun in Tekken.

It is valid advice. I don't like those launchers. They irritate me in every possible way and are just plain lame.

Demand they fix the match making. You should have fun winning every other game, and not become frustrated of the endless learning curve or trying to become "better" for competitiveness sake.

That's why I love fighting games. But it's been a long time sence I've put alot of time into a fighter, I burnt out quick on sf6 but I want to learn tekken 8. I'm also learning how to use a fight pad at the same time so this is going to be a long but fun learning process with this game.

I could care less about winning every other game or winning the majority of the time, if the other person is better then me then they are better. I just want to understand what their doing differently and why it works so I can either learn it myself or learn what counters it.

Although I will say I hope tekken doesn't go the same way as mortal combat with some of the juggles and wall pressure I've seen some people do where it's a damn near full health bar combo. Maybe a mechanic like injustice 2 had where you could meter burn out of a combo 2 or 3 times in a fight would be a good addition just to make it to where scratch players can rely on their one combo they memorized in practice mode
There are no 10 frame launchers in the game - the closest thing are the jab strings that can lead into a knockdown or followup (like Kazuya or Devil Jin). The fastest launchers come out at 14 - though there are plenty of nasty frametraps in the game, and some sure feel faster than others because of how the animations look.

I think your philosophy of picking the characters whose vibe you like best is absolutely spot on. Every character can perform - and while some have steep execution requirements, they're not the ones you seem to have gravitated towards. As long as you maintain an attitude of trying to figure out what went wrong in games & consciously trying to improve, I'm confident you'll do great. It's all about self-improvement at the end of the day.

If you're able to get video of your games it'll be much easier to give feedback and understand your needs.

Then you should maybe dive deep into the mechanics, frame times, hit boxes and so on. The answers are there.

Back in time nobody cared of those things, it was more of the gut feeling of what works and when and what does not. Learn by playing, not by staring pixel art like pictures and frame times.

Either way is right, there is no wrong way. Chill is right in either way, remember that this is just a game and is it really worthwhile to take it dead seriously?
