Let's Talk: A brief look at the Tekken 8 metagame November 2024 edition
We got some more data, so hey, when there's data, your's truly is here to share it just so you guys can ignore it and complain some more that you don't know how to play.

Let's go.

Rank Distribution.

I'll use Aliette's pic because it's more colorful, so here ya go:

https://x.com/AlietteFaye/status/1863553707972927849/photo/1

Well, from what we can see currently, contrary to scrub belief, now we kinda do have proof that the game is pushing players to Fujin, as every single data dump we've had so far showed Fujin increasing in size, now being the most populated rank.

Previously, during the last data dump in September, it was the 2nd:

https://x.com/AlietteFaye/status/1835526627360473540/photo/1

So yes, the sytem is pushing people to Fujin, I guess now even a certain contrarian has to admit that the system is intentionally designed like that.

Now then, moving to characters, let'sa go.

- Most popular 10 characters - all ranks
1. Jin
2. King
3. Kazuya
4. Hwoarang
5. Heihachi
6. Bryan
7. Reina
8. Steve
9. Law
10. Dragunov

- Least popular 10 characters - all ranks
1. Panda
2. Shaheen
3. Zafina
4. Kuma
5. Raven*
6. Leroy
7. Leo
8. Claduio
9. Jack
10. Lidia

Yea, for all ruckus you guys were making about how cool Raven is when he was first announced and you're glad to see him back, ya guys sure ain't playing him.

- Most popular 10 characters - Tekken God+
1. Jin
2. Bryan
3. King
4. Hwoarang
5. Heihachi
6. Dragunov
7. Lee
8. Steve
9. Yoshimitsu
10. Lars*

Ok, this one surprised me as well, for all the "Lars is weak" talk, he's apparently a top 10 popularity when it comes to highest ranks, there has to be a reason for it.

- Least popular 10 characters - Tekken God+
1. Panda
2. Lidia
3. Leroy
4. Leo
5. Paul
6. Shaheen
7. Azucena
8. Jun
9. Kuma
10. Reina

- Highest 10 winrates - Destroyer to Fujin
1. Panda
2. Kuma
3. Zafina
4. Claudio
5. Jack
6. Shaheen
7. Feng
8. Lars
9. Alisa
10. Raven

Note: Lee and Debilu Jim are the very next two, so for all the talks of how "hard they are to play", in these ranks them see to be cheesing quite well enough.

- Lowest 10 winrates - Destroyed to Fujin
1. Reina
2. Kazuya
3. King
4. Steve
5. Hwoarang
6. Heihachi
7. Law
8. Jun
9. Azucena
10. Xiaoyu

- Highest 10 winrates - Raijin to Tekken Emperor
1. Panda
2. Zafina
3. Shaheen
4. Kuma
5. Claudio
6. Jack
7. Raven
8. Lidia
9. Feng
10. Victor

Note: 11 and 12 and Eddy and Debilu Jim, so he's cheesing quite fine in this rank as well despite him being "extremely weak, the worst in the game and very hard to play".

- Lowest 10 winrates - Raijin to Tekken Emperor
1. Kazuya
2. Reina
3. Hwoarang
4. King
5. Paul
6. Lili
7. Law
8. Xiaoyu
9. Bryan
10. Steve

- Highest 10 winrates - Tekken God+
1. Feng
2. Kuma
3. Shaheen
4. Nina
5. Lili
6. Claudio
7. Panda
8. Azucena
9. Heihachi
10. Xiaoyu

Note: 11 and 12 this time are Lidia and Victor, followed by Eddy and Lee

- Lowest 10 winrates - Tekken God+
1. Jack
2. Asuka
3. Lars
4. Reina
5. Alisa
6. King
7. Raven
8. Law
9. Dragunov
10. Leo

We also have some data about popularity of characters based on region, but to save some space here, I'll do the top 10 most popular for each region.

- Most popular - American
1. King
2. Jin
3. Kazuya
4. Reina
5. Heihachi
6. Hwoarang
7. Bryan
8. Steve
9. Law
10. Lili

- Most popular - Europe
1. Jin
2. Kazuya
3. King
4. Hwoarang
5. Heihachi
6. Bryan
7. Reina
8. Law
9. Steve
10. Lili

- Most popular - Asia
1. Dragunov
2. Jin
3. King
4. Hwoarang
5. Heihachi
6. Bryan
7. Kazuya
8. Reina
9. Paul
10. Victor

- Most popular - Middle East
1. King
2. Jin
3. Kazuya
4. Bryan
5. Heihachi
6. Dragunov
7. Law
8. Hwoarang
9. Steve
10 Paul

- Most popular - Oceania
1. Jin
2. Bryan
3. King
4. Steve
5. Heihachi
6. Kazuya
7. Hwoarang
8. Dragunov
9. Reina
10. Law

And finally, we do have a tier list based on Masters (Tekken God+) winrates as someone in the comments of that thread asked for it, so I guess that if you want a character that's really good for ranked, picking from here, ain't bad. Yes, it's the same graph as the Winrates - Tekken God+ put in tier list form for easier readability.

S - Feng, Kuma
A - Shaheen, Nina, Lili, Claudio
B - Panda, Azucena, Heihachi, Xiaoyu, Lidia, Victor, Eddy
C - Lee, Jun, Leroy, Yoshimitsu, Devil Jin, Zafina, Bryan, Hwoarang, Kazuya, Steve, Paul, Jin, Leo. Dragunov, Law, Raven, King
D - Alisa, Reina, Lars, Asuka, Jack

Only 33% of players reached Fujin. Is that a lot? If you take a sample of all those who bought the game, this figure will be several times smaller, since many do not play actively, many left the game without reaching Fujin.

Tekken 7 had similar figures by the end of its life. There, Fujin could be reached in a similar way with only 40% of victories

Obviously the system pushes you towards fujin given that you earn more points than you lose.
However, as usual, NotQuiteFactual's rank distribution data is still flawed in multiple ways.
Still interesting but must be taken with a grain of salt.

Well, if you can bring "less flawed" data from somewhere, myself and others are all ears.

Otherwise, this is the most accurate info we have.

I think the data is excellent but it’s easy to have wrong conclusions.

I really like that the numbers only include very recent ranked games ignoring inactive players or private and quick matches.

sure, I agree. given that we don't have much else to go by it's interesting but there are several reasons as to why this data is misleading.

first of all, it only counts people who played ranked during a period of two weeks, not all players of tekken 8. that in itself doesn't mean that fujin is now the most common rank. more accurately this would mean something like: fujin players were the most dedicated ranked players.

secondly, NotQuiteFactual only counts highest rank RECORDED per player, not overall highest rank achieved. Tekken god players playing on their secondary blue rank characters are counted as blue players, not tekken god players.
He explained this in one of his earlier posts in response to a comment, saying

(QUOTE)
"I only count the highest rank character a player played on during the sample.

If you have multiple Fujin characters then you only count as a single Fujin player.

HOWEVER, since this is based off of replays, if you have multiple Fujin characters but you only played your Mighty Ruler alt character on the day when I gathered this data then you would be considered a mighty ruler."
(END OF QUOTE)

At this point I blame him for not not explaining it properly right away. I still see lots of people getting this wrong when reading the comments on his posts.

back when tekkenstats.gg was still active I compared their stats to NotQuiteFactual's latest post and the difference in fujin ranks was about +8% higher in the data of NotQuiteFactual

I know about that part, and it is indeed an issue, but again, we don't have anything else to go by, so by what we do have, Fujin is the most populated rank.

Forgot to mention one more interesting point. Given that he only collects highest rank recorded, it means that everyone who manages to reach Fujin and then demotes back to purple ranks again, is still counted as Fujin as long as they are using the same character

Zafina feels so out of place within some ranks...

Points to consider:

- I believe the majority who reach Fujin are players who at least played one or more previous Tekken titles.

- The data doesn't specify anything about how many scrubs use multiple characters. I see many scrubs reach Tekken God who whoop the floor and go fast track through Blue Ranks.

I always thought that ravens outfits look pretty bad.

I like how strongest most broken character in the game Dragunov is consistently in every winrate top from destroyer up to Tekken god coming from actual data.

Dragunov suffers from success.

If you notice, he's extremely popular, and now, pretty much all popular characters have low winrates.

In some regions, such as Asia, he is the most popular character, overtaking Jin and King, who tend to be the most popular overall.

His popularity coupled with his high tournament success show that he is very strong.

It's only shows that he is cool character with dedicated players.
