How to play Paul?
Especially when people start to sidestep phoenix smasher and block?

This post may sound like trolling, but it's really not. How do I open people up when they start to play keep out? Also what is the best approach against people who like to duck? I'd like to play it safe and consistent instead of guessing and random hop kicking. Unfortunately Df2 doesn't launch while if they are crouched

Also what's the game after df1~sway?

poke with qcf3, d1, df1, use grabs, he has a good throw game. Try to bait out a whiff and punish with ff2,1 or qcf2.
After df1 - bs4, bs1, bs2, you have many options, better check it yourself in practice. 4 is good ch launcher. bs2 is engager, good move overall too.

df4 on ch gives you b1,2 or f2 to heat activate, you can use it in neutral too.

It starts to make sense little by little. Thank you.
The questions regarding df1~sway was more like what his "gameplan" looks like after df1. Like what to do if blocked/on hit. Should one cancel the sway and then go for move x. Or probe with bs3, or just yolo bs2, or condition with move whatever to ... Idk, something along those lines. Probably common knowledge for tekken veterans but not for me lmao.

You gotta stop relying on your character to win for you and learn how to tekken.

You're probably right. But how do I do that?

Practicing movement, defense, learning matchups, and learning to read the player. Simplest example of that last one is hitting a Yoshimitsu with a plus-on-block move, and seeing if he mashes flash instantly.

Deathfist - run up Demoman - hopkick - Heat smash (-12, basically safe) ggs that's how to Paul 101

Well lets ask ourselves what exactly is universally good to have on every char?

Block Punishment,
Whiff Punishment,
Knowing your frames and working with them,
Knowing your enemies frames and working with them (exposing mashing etc),
Poking Game,
Throw Breaking,
Adapting to your opponent (Paying attention instead of auto piloting),
Movement (Horizontal and Vertical)

If you're good at these things you're good at every character pretty much immediately.
These things are Tekken, everything else is just character specific knowledge.
It will only get you so far unless you play xiaoyu.

Yes Ryoda is right IMO. Paul is really strong but he is more like a classic Tekken char.

The way to be very strong with Paul is to be very good at punishment in general (so you need very good matchup knowledge, he has very good punishes and does insane damage in general).

You need to use movement ( spacing, stepping) and pokes to get into the right range to apply your 50-50s and good throw game.

Very good defence is more important with him, you cannot just often flowchart your way to victory like with other chars.
