Can someone tell me what happened to Tekken 8?
I never bought it but when it released pretty much everyone was calling it the best fighting game ever or game of the year and it got so much praise. So much praise I swear it was at nearly overwhelmingly positive reviews and nearly 50,000 steam players so I wanted to get it when I saved up. However, now it looks nothing like that based off of reviews. I just wanted to ask what happened? Was the game corrupted by corporate greed? Was it ever good to begin with (is the game play actually good)? Was the story good? I'm not sure I want to buy it right now. I liked Tag 2 and 7 a lot and this looks similar but I'm not sure. I hope I don't offend anyone, I'm just confused.

The devs started using Tekken 8 as more of a cash grab rather than treating it like a fighting game, and once the honeymoon phase was over people’s perception on the game aged like dollar store milk. I made two long posts on this game:

One explaining why it deserves a mid score: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1778820/discussions/0/4299322040762379196/

Another explaining why SF6 is better: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1778820/discussions/0/4333105589465341821/

1-people is exited about new release
2-people plays a lot and notices some balance (big issues)
3-adds microtransactions after launch, no one was expecting MTX at all
4-balance patches takes ages to release
5-in a already aggresive game, some characters are just nuts (dragunov, feng, Jin, etc)
6-total radio silence by devs, they are just focusing in the tekken world tour making fat cash
7-people dont feel any reason to play at all and feel abandon by the devs
8-the hardcore fans feels more and more frustrated daily
9-everyone is pursuing the dream of being the best pokemon trainer, so if u dont play ranked at all, u will have to wait much more for matchmaking in quickplay mode (without points)
10- devs introduced some kind of skill based matchmaking for no particular reason, so it made the queue for finding games REALLY long, it went from about 1 min to 3 or 5, even 10 if u have few players in your region.

basically that have been the gossip in the last months,
some people got really exited with the news about the new character (lidia) and the new stages, photo mode, balance patch, etc. But the devs released the lidia trailer and went full silent mode, I guess some players are just waiting for new content, Me at least enjoy a lot the game but only play when my friends are online, at the moment I feel no joy in playing the game online at all or with random players.

It's the reality of publicly traded game companies, investors demand that games make them at least as much money as they would have made just investing into the stock market, if not more.
We're probably headed for another videogame crash at this rate, the growth just isn't sustainable.
Just hope Tekken isn't one of the IPs we lose when it goes down.

nah tekken is like call of duty, too big for falling, they just study the problems and see ways for making players happy again.

both IPs been around for decades

The game is still great (some balance changes are still being addressed... a bit slowly).
Some people got REALLY salty about the battle pass and ingame shop.

Mind, I don't think the game is bad right now, but putting in the cash shop and battle pass after the game released really rankles.

People figured out that the more you play the more mashing is rewarded. Fundamentals are thrown out the window unless you're at the very top of the food chain in GoD (not even fully true) The gameplay aspect is absolute garbage right now, very boring. It may change in the future. On top of that, the official reviews were issued before Bandai introduced an in-game shop with microtransactions which had not been announced before. Additionally, a battle pass was introduced out of nowhere. And if that wasnt enough, the dev team changed priority during matchmaking to search for Prowess (an arbitrary value without meaning) instead of rank, so priority search now is penalizing people who want to rank up more than one character for no reason, making online extremely hard, not only in ranked but in ANY mode.

So right now it is not worth your money.

Namco mostly owns themselves and self publishes.

0 excuse for them.

Nothing happened. It's still best fighting game out there even though they broke a lot of balanced stuff with patches. People just want to get free stuff by review bombing.
It's the Street Fighter V of Tekken
