Advice for moving past orange?
I am currently at destroyer rank with Jin. But now it seems that I cannot for the life of me rank up. I am not new to Tekken but this is the first time that I have taken online seriously enough to try and advance my rank. I win about one out of every two matches against other oranges and most of the matches against yellow players now. However, I get absolutely bodied against most reds (not all) and I lose any progress made when losing points. I am focusing on getting frame traps in when I can, and am able to launch punish much more often now then I used to. Is there any general or character specific advice for Jin that may help me get past this hurdle i'm stuck at with orange ranks?

Maybe red ranks in your region play tend to play in a way that beats your playstyle.

As a King player who's been in and out of red ranks (I know you're a Jin player but hear me out), I noticed that Red ranks love to duck against me and launch punish any throw attempts I do. As a result, I had to adapt and use mids until I'm sure they're not ducking constantly -- and I mean 100% sure, not half sure, as some players just never stop ducking. They're scared of throws, justifiably, of course. Your case is probably different than mine due to matchup and regional differences, so you'll have to study why the kind of agression that carried you through yellow and orange ranks has not worked against reds.

Another reason why they might be destroying you is knowledge checks and strings. Strings are my number 1 weakness and I havent figured them out yet. I BELIEVE you have to keep trying and testing your options, not be afraid to lose. Pay attention to animations and try and see how much you have to block, what you can duck, high crush, evade with a stance, react to, sidestep, backdash, interrupt with a jab or downjab, power crush through. I've been trying sidesteps lately and it feels good when succeed, like you outplayed your opponent.

TL;DR study why your isn't aggression isn't working and look ways to open up your opponents' defense, and experiment with your defensive options.

Yeah I think a big part may be the speed at which im processing my next move as well. I tend to play defensively and try to control neutral spacing, so when someone starts rushing down my throat I struggle to regain control of our distance. As for string usage I find that switching my 10 frame punishes at random really goes a long way. It may just be as you said and I need to polish up my match-up knowledge in addition to pushing a slightly more aggressive play-style.

Update: I think it may just legit be a "skill issue" (memes aside). I just played around 20 ranked matches and won 2. As a result I got demoted to vanquisher. It may be that I have simply found my skill bracket and will have a very hard time progressing from this point on. I try not to get frustrated because I think that is contributing to my losses but its so hard not to be upset at seeing yourself go from constant tangible progress to hitting a brick wall and stumbling backwards. Or it could just be that I can not take Jin any higher in the ranks with how I play, which sucks because he is fun as hell to play.

Jin is ez top 10.
You can either check some guides online or use this

Next check some high-level replays to see what top Jins do.

I know how you feel. Stuck at Garyu and Eliminator. However,

I've identified some of my flaws thanks to practice mode, replays and YouTube/Twitch content. I've also watched guides to learn more about my main, both "how to play" and "anti-guides". Anti-guides are useful too because understanding the weaknesses of your characters allows you to work around them. Then, there are general guides about fundamentals.

First, I highly recommend you check out PhiDX on YouTube. He's been making guides for new Tekken players for Tekken 8, from basic fundamentals to advanced techniques like Korean Backdash.

Then, should also look out for Jin mains on Twitch and YouTube, both mid ranked and high ranked, in order to get more ideas about your character. IMO when you watch high levels, you should first focus on the simple stuff they're doing which you can quickly integrate into your gameplay rather than waste time high level stuff, and when you watch lower levels you should try to understand what is working for them and what isn't, and then try some of their stuff yourself. There may be also some guides. Recently, Jesandy and Lil Majin released some very useful guides for King, which is their main; I hope you find good guides for Jin too.

Not a bad idea, I have spent a good amount of time with starter guides but not really with anything more advanced. I'll for sure dig around a bit more in the upper levels of players.

Update: Got promoted to Eliminator. I think part of my problem is a combination of still relying on basic tools a bit too much and really sticking to a defensive play-style. I really wanted to focus on getting a solid foundation of basics with Jin first, then worry about the fancy stuff later, and I think now it is time to start looking at those more advanced options. I checked some more advanced guides and began incorporating some of it into my game plan as well as playing a little more aggressively. It is a bit hard to force myself to push into the enemy because I have always been a defensive player in street fighter, mortal kombat, guilty gear etc but I have noticed people backing off a lot more than I used to so it gives me more time to think. Side steps are also helping somewhat but you really need to read what your opponent is going to do next.

TL;DR - Began incorporating more advanced options into my basic play-style and also pushed myself to be more aggressive against opponents. Side steps also go a long way if you know when you can get away with them. Am now at Eliminator rank.

it doesnt even matter what rank you are. once you hit tenryu or what ever its called right before purple ranks, everyone disconnects in your promo matches or if you win general.

Record a reply from a game you want advice on then post it here.
I have some ideas of where you might be going wrong but they're only guesses until we see you play.

if you win like 50% of your games versus similar ranked players, win most of your games vs lower ranks and lose most of your games vs higher ranked players -> you are exactly where you belong (for now).

your question should be how you can improve. watching other people play you character, watching replays, labbing moves you have troubles dealing with, improve punishing might be a good start.

It would be good to see some example videos. Ideally from games that were close: 3-2 and 2-3 in rounds.

I’m a scrub in blue ranks slowly climbing up so I’m kind of an expert on how to escape low ranks. I was stuck at Dominator at first.

My general advice:
- Single punch and a low punch are arguably the most important moves in the game.
- Throws are super powerful when people in lower ranks don’t break them. They can be used to „punish” attacks that are about -4 to -9 on block. They are basically like unblockable moves at this point.
- armored moves are like free wins. They win most interactions except lows and throws. If your enemy start doing lows and throws then you start doing hopkicks for max damage.
- always make sure to use heat. Most characters are way more powerful in heat and not using it is a huge waste of resources.
