Recently bought the game, trying it out. having difficulties desciding who to play though, since I used to play only 2D fighting games and all cahracters in Tekken seem pretty simular. Would be glad to recieve any advice!

My mains in other games, if that is needed for reference:
SF6 - Luke, JP, Guile;
GGST - Sol, Asuka, a little bit of Axl;
BBCF- Susanoo, Hazama;
MBAACC - F-Aoko;
SF3 - Dudley, Chun-Li.

Whoever looks cool.
Those games have inputs that some new Tekken players find difficult, so you could jump straight into Reina, Kazuya, Devil Jin, Jin, King, and probably do all of their movelists without much difficulty. I'm talking about EWGFs, giant swings, obliteration.

I get the feeling you'd like Lars though.

Don't pick a Mishima.

Tecto should be fine, the inputs people struggle with on them are used by the characters he played in BBCF and MBAACC.

A dp motion isn't the same as an ewgf. I'd still say not to play a Mishima.

It's the same if you do a Perfect EWGF. The neutral isn't necessary. And with neutral I'd say it's easier than a dp motion.

I know you will probably hate my answer, but I suggest going into practice and finding a character you mesh with. Looking at your mains from other games you might like Lili, Yoshimitsu, Paul, Steve, Jack-8, Victor, Raven, and/or Law.

Asuka and Jun are both easy to learn and powerful/fun.

If you really like weird samurai like Susanoo you should check out Yoshimitsu, but he will have more stuff to learn.

It's absolutely harder than a dp motion. DP motions are easy as hell. Having to do a just frame+neutral dp motion, while under pressure, after side stepping, is entirely different. If he starts with a Mishima he'll spend hours wondering why he can't ewgf instead of actually learning the game. Do not start with a Mishima. I don't understand what the Tekken devs are smoking ensuring the main character has mechanics no newbie could hope to utilize, but I didn't make the game, and you are wrong.
Is that a genuine issue for people who come from other games? I read that the main issue is they can't buffer the inputs. Tekkens always been my main game and I've never been very good at 2D games that aren't Guilty Gear. I can't really deny or confirm what you're saying.

I take this a bit farther, once I know their basic buttons a launcher and punish I take it to ranked and see how I feel once I hit yellow.

This is probably the best way to pick a character if you want to stick to the game for longer than a month or so.

Some characters are easier to pick up and start with, but liking a character makes it more likely you'll stick with them to actually learn how to play well.

Most characters have fairly similar basic tools, but once you get past that you'll quickly find that even the Mishimas have fundamental differences that give each of them a unique feel.

Heck Paul and Bryan may both seem like "Big Unsafe Heavy Hit" guys on the surface, but they have vastly different gameplay once you get past the button mashing stage.

Honestly, I'd just recommend to try out characters you like the look of in practice mod. Learn some basic pokes, launchers, see if they have stances and do some combo challenges.

Shaheen is probably the esiest character to learn the game with.

Mishimas like Kazuya, Reina, DJ have very basic gameplan and are quite easy in that aspect. Their execution is the hard part.

Then there's Lee, who got a lot of just-frame moves and is perhaps the most execution intense character because of it, although he can be played without just-frames for the start.

Stance heavy characters like Yoshimitzu, Xiaoyu, Raven, Zafina can be overwhelming for a beginner but very rewarding in the long run.

For example: I practiced with Lars, learned his basic pokes, punishers, launchers and how his stances work. When I jumped online I noticed that Lars doesn't really click for me after 2 days. The good thing is that I now know the matchup better. Next I picked Raven, who also got a few stances and is quite tricky but for some reason he makes more sense to me.

Just my 2 cents.

Can you describe your prefered style without using characters from other games?

Although for learning basics I'd say Paul or Shaheen. Simply because they don't have much funny business going on.
