The devs wanted the lounge to have a 90's arcade feeling, but i think they've push the realism of the social experience a bit too much lol.
You can add friends with their Tekken ID without meeting in game. To do this, go to the Replay tab, and then Online Replay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiapClWWXxM
Search for replays with that 12 alphanumerical character ID. View the profile of the left / right side player (whichever one is the person you are looking for). From there, you can friend them. Then you can invite them to Player Rooms, or just use your friend list to track which lobby they are in to match with them e.g. on the cabinets.
