Looking for some tips
So I've been trying to hop on and play some ranked for the past hour or so, after learning some basic stuff in training mode as Kazuya. I should probably learn more combos and more buttons, but more than anything I just wanna get a feel for the game, and start to understand more about movement and neutral and whatnot.

The issue is that I'm getting stomped. Dude's with beginner rank (which is what I'm stuck at) are whipping out huge combos that put me into the wall, and then keep kicking me when I'm knocked down so I'm not even sure how to get up. They're not doing anything wrong, I just suck and this game's skill floor is wayyyy higher than I thought it'd be, to where I can't even play against people at the literal lowest rank in the game and know whats going on.

So, any tips of things I should learn or practice in training mode before going back into the gauntlet? And please, please please, do not give me any "it's a fighting game you're supposed to get your ass beat for like 500 billion hours first" ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because I know, I've spent thousands of hours getting my ass beat in several other fighting games, just not Tekken. I'm fine with the grind and I'm fine with getting washed until I learn, I just want a bit of advice of things I should be aware of or things I should focus on learning so I can get rolling and have some fun.

Edit: I'm also curious if there's any good ways to play with people who are newer like me? Like, a Discord or something where I can hop in a lobby with scrubs like me so I can have room to figure ♥♥♥♥ out in matches instead of spending my first 300 hours in training mode.

Don't worry too much about combos for now, having just a basic one around 60 dmg is fine.
The thing to focus on first is block and punishment, try punishment training in practice mode so it shows you a couple.
Other than blocking and ducking, movement is an importasnt defensive tool(the 3d game thin is not just for show).

Regarding getting up there are several ways to do it and sometimes it turns into a guessing game against the opponent, if you get up the wrong way you get hit again. (look up okizeme on youtube)

Kazuya is a bit of a tricky character because you can't just go unga bunga spamming attacks for the win, but that also forces you to learn playing the actual game.
Try out a few of the sample combos in the practice mode. If you pause the game in practice you can pick "sample combos" which is easy to practice one part at a time. Also there is a replay system which shows you some tips for what you can do better from your online matches. I haven't used it myself yet but I believe it can help a bit atleast for knowing what to do. My recomendation is to learn a few low and high attacks to mix up, that way you will get an opening for you combos. It's also important not to stress when battling, try to block attacks until you see an opening. The 1 and 2 button is usually the fastest to do a quick jab, so use it for an opening.

I'm quite new to Tekken aswell, played a little bit of Tekken 7 before but I hope my tips can help a fellow new player :Hearthian_Wink:

Honestly thank you, I totally forgot about that feature. I think my biggest issue so far definitely lies in punishing and then hit confirming/keeping up pressure, so I imagine the replay feature is gonna help me a lot.

Thats 100% why I picked him, I've played a lot of other fighting games and I'd consider myself ok in the ones I've put more time into, but I've never had a good grasp on Tekken so I wanted to pick Kazuya to force me to learn the game and not be able to just gorilla my way up to a higher rank.

Usually you find some people on the forums which will help or after playing online also unfortunately kaz requires much lab work hours so it is unavoidable learning wavu wavu ewgf (all variations) set ups etc gotta dissect it in small pieces at time

learn to recognize what to do when - when to use launcher, when to punish, when to use power crush, when it is good time for counterhit moves etc
You don't need huge combos. If you want a combo, start by learning a reliable one even if it's not too damaging.

Another thing is that combos won't make you good. Best combo won't win you the game if you can't launch your opponent. You need to create situations that will give you advantage. If you're getting launched for huge damage all the time - try to play safer - don't press buttons too much, don't rush in with attacks. If you got hit usually you are at a disadvantage and you need to block now.

IMO you need to try punishment training to understand what punish is and how they work.

And about getting hit on the floor.
It's a part of the game (it's called okizeme, oki for short) and it's a bit of gamble sometimes. But there are couple things that may help you:
1. You can press the button the moment you hit the ground and you character will roll and get up really fast.
2. You can hold back to get up faster and moving back a bit
3. sometimes it's ok to take a hit lying on the floor coz it will push you further away from the enemy to get up safely

PS and watch your replays, they have great features and nice hints ;)

Tip is to go to ranked find one guy of your level and friend him, then go to custom game and have fun together while learning. Awesome time.
