Find a character through combo trials

Hi all,

I have been having a lot of fun with this Tekken, the first I played since Tekken 3. I defaulted back to King and Paul from back in the day, but there a lot of characters I think are interesting, but I'm not blessed with a lot of downtime.

Im willing to lab characters and get familiar with their moves, but I can't make time to slowly find out what the 32 characters do.

Would you say the combo trials from the Practice Menu are a good indicator of how your main plays and what their overall feeling is like?
If not, how would you recommend trying to find a new character? I love Bryan and I like Reina's design a lot, but from what I heard they are both really difficult to play.

With that voice actor, it doesn't matter how good he is. Can't argue with that ^^

+ he has entertaining moves + he is half devil+ he is the main bad guy in T8. Is there any cooler character than him ? Probably only jin ... Other characters are kinda boring .

It's off topic, but I always found Jin to be bland and very uninteresting. I liked Heihachi a lot better.

Then you probably dont like tekken story at all. This down is what Harada thinks. It has always been about Jin as main guy.


"Tekken series' director Katsuhiro Harada has said that Jin is his favorite character in the series along with Heihachi. He says the Tekken story is written from Jin's perspective because he is the main character"


I personally never loved any character who is not Mishima . But everybody has different taste.

I don't care about the story, I care about the solid gameplay and great cast. I finished the Story Mode for Tekken 8, but didn't very much enjoy it, so Harada's right.

The combo trials show you some key moves that will be useful in combos, but they're never the actual optimized combo routes.
They may or may not be representative of what's really like to play the actual combos.

I think a quick look at the move list and playing some rounds against CPU gives you a better idea if you might like the character or not before delving deeper.

Another way might be to look at high level play of said character, just keeping in mind you may not be able to do the same things easily.

Thanks for the advice. I watch Lil Majin but it's not even the execution, but his spacing combined with his movement and probably his knowledge of the options his opponent has.

I think I might do the story-extension or arcade with a couple of characters and see how that works out.

1)Go to Practice.
2)Pick a character and lab it for ~10 mins (just spam everything that you can).
3)Quit Practice.
4)Repeat Step 1, 2 and 3 until you get a rough idea of what everyone is capable of.

Don't worry about hard to play. It's usually a move or two that makes some characters considered hard but it can be brain dead easy otherwise. I see tons of Reina, Kaz, Devil Jin players not doing a single electric. The basic bread and butter gameplay is generally very easy.
