Demotion and Promotion question

How does it work?? I sometimes get demoted when fighting people 2 ranks higher than me but I get promoted for fighting people who have lower ranks than me.

Can someone explain?

Only asking because if you switch characters you start over on rank, but if you switch back to original character that got promoted it will show that rank again.

You have a total amount of ranked points that goes up, or down, depending on if you win, or lose, respectively. Winning vs someone lower ranked than you gives less, winning vs someone higher ranked than you gives more, and opposite for losses. You can rank up from beating people who are lower ranked occasionally, and sometimes get downranked by losing to them, or people above you. You can see the bar sliding with your total points after matches.
