I'm So Bad(Not A Rant)
Trying to learn some Yoshimitsu moves and I've been stuck on "Challenge 3" for like an hour. I can do the starter flying knee but the other stuff I can't help but screw up. I haven't really played Tekken since like Tekken 2 on PS1 way back when, so maybe I'm just not familiar with how tight the inputs are or something because it feels like there's zero wiggle room between button inputs to get a combo to work right. At least compared to other fighting games. And it's not a complaint on the game, I'm just stating how it feels to me while I take a break from failing the combo training.

Combos take time. It's okay to struggle in the first week.

If you use the Play Demo feature, it'll make a noise every time an input is pressed. Might help with timing hits.

For this particular Yoshi combo, the second and third hit come out of backturn, maybe you need a smidge more time after the first knee to finish turning around before pressing?

The first backhand after the flying knee comes out, but I immediately move to hit the second input and my character a lot of the time will just kinda stand there and watch them fall over. It's like if I hit the input immediately after the first one it's too soon, but if I wait like half a second then it's too late and the combo counter resets.

Edit:
I'm gonna keep trying regardless, but maybe once this head fog from covid clears up it'll be easier for me to hit my timings. I'm just used to games like GGST and whatnot that give you generous input windows. Tekkens seems really precise.

With some quick testing, the max timing window between the 2,1 hits is 15 frames, but it still works even with 1 frame or even a stray 1+2 between the inputs.

i break it down into the separate strings, then look at each string individually. I do them in order but not in a combo, just example, uf4; df3; df2; d2,4; 1+2; f1,2,4. I'll leave out the uf4. then do the rest 1 move at a time, building up muscle memory and also memory, so when i see a move i can remember what comes after. I keep doing this for a while until i feel i can do the combo. When i try the combo and i drop it or forget, i don't reset immediately i finish pressing buttons for rest of the combo and then reset and start again. Maybe this will help, slow way to learn but if you are hitting your head against the wall, dismantling the wall into separate bricks is sometimes faster

Really? I feel quite the opposite, that Tekken is very forgiving for inputs compared to other games, especially 2D fighters.
I can't even do the Spinning Bird Kick of Chun-li consistently in SF, but in Tekken I have no problem inputting moves or doing combos. Save for the classic 10-hit combos, I was never able to do these.

But then again I am not a Yoshimitsu main so maybe that one is tough.

In any case, take it easy, it takes time to build muscle memory :) Don't get fixated on one specific combo, it is enough to know a few for now, or make your own.

Also hope you get well soon, take care!

Do some inputs in Tekken need to be rolled instead of pressed? Like doing that 2, 1 portion of the combo rolling my finger off of 2 and into 1 instead of lifting it off of 2 and onto 1 seemed a lot more consistent with the moves execution. That just me or is that an actual thing in Tekken?

I'm a scrub but i feel like there is order to keys when you're inputting them, rolling for inputs seems to be a thing

Rolling or pianoing is a thing in Tekken for sure, I don't know that it's required for this particular move, but if the move comes out whatever you did is probably fine! :squirtheh:

moves in brackets like 2(2,3) you have to press them fast, so you can piano or slide them, 2 then 2,3 quickly, if you are playing on controller you can also try claw style, that way you have two fingers for face buttons instead of just your thumb.

Yoshimitsu might be not the best pick as a beginner... play Victor and spam projectiles, or play Lars, Alisa or Azucena for free wins

Y then X, you want to press them as soon as you see dummies shoulder blades hit the ground and there legs should be at a height close to yoshi's upper torso. if the legs drop to low your Y will miss, X may still hit but the combos a fail.

I want to get better at the game, not just master some cheese combos.
