Brand New to Tekken. Will Reina be a good character to learn?
New to Tekken and pretty new to fighting games in general. Ive bounced off of all the recent releases do to various reason, though its mostly due to poor interactions with that games community.

So Im trying Tekken, hoping that this will be the fighting game to hook me for longer than a month or two. Out of all the characters I have seen so far. I have two favorites that I want to learn. Zafina and Reina. Reina is by far my favorite as I love her design so much. Though to what I understand shes a 'Mashima' fighter and i dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

Just generally want to know if maybe I should try someone else and not get my hopes up on a character that would be too frustrating to learn for me.

I typically love fast pace characters. My mains in other fighters were:

Mk1 Mileena
Dnf Duel Brawler & Red Mage
GGS Bridget & Faust
SF6 Manon & Jamie

Hoping any Tekken vets might have insight on how best for me to get to learning Tekken!

She won't be easy but she should be effective
its never wrong to go with Jin. Alisa also said hes the hope of mankind.
lets go team Jin!

Reina will be hard for new players to get into, mainly due to the PEWGF requirement for optimal damage/combos. Zafina imo is one of the hardest to learn of the whole roster since shes basically 4 diff movesets.

Reina would be a good choice to learn the game with as she is mostly new with
some "Mishima" moves from previous fighters.

Zafina is pretty lack luster. She was "C Tier" at best in Tekken 7 and not much better in the ones she was featured in before that.

Playing a new to Tekken fighter will be your best bet.
As people will actually have to learn to play against a new move set or have done homework versus drawing on prior experience from previous Tekken installments.

Reina, Azucena or Victor will probably be your best bet.

After that Jun, Even though she is a "Returning" Character.
She has not been in a mainline story title since Tekken 2.
It looks like she may have similar moves to that of Unknown
the Arcade boss from the Tekken Tag Tournament games on top of
some of her more traditional moves.

Based on you liking Mileena and Manon, You may Also like King.
He has interact grapple combos that require practice and set-up like the Aerials from those fighters.

You may also like Asuka (Karate with Imports)
Or Xiaoyu (Traditionalist Chinese Kung-Fu)
they have good evasive properties, And side stepping ability as well as meaty combos.

Zafina was literally considered S tier with the best movement in the game...

Although I actually think Zafina was overatted and even Aslan ash largely has dropped her recently for Kunimitsu and now Kataerina it's pretty wild to consider her C tier. lol

If I learned with Heihachi you can learn with Reina.
Honestly you can start with any character, what's more important is that you like how they look and play.
Just accept that some moves are hard and will take time to learn.
Try more than one as well. (starting with story more helps)

easiest thing to do is to pick a character who you think is cool. Go to practice mode and test out the combos without looking at the movelist. Do you feel like you can combo strings easily with that character? Does it feel natural? Does the combo flow nicely? What is their launcher?

Once you find a character which you feel comfortable with, then you should check out the move list.
The game has a training mode. You can pick your character and learn the basics there. There are also some basic combo trials for each, so you can mess around there too and see.

This advice confuses me a little because from what I played of the demo and the 3 of 4 characters I tried (jin, Paul, and Nina.) I found that how I would normally experiment with characters just netted little to no results because it seems like every single move and combo has directional input as well. I had to go to the move list to see a basic 3 or 4 hit combostarter.

Just play whoever looks cool to you, I wouldn't recommend a Mishima until you get solid fundamentals though.

lol at the guy saying Zafina was C tier in T7. She was literally top 5, borderline broken and often played at major tournaments(with great success).

Yes, the game is heavy on directional inputs, most of the execution is on that side as well.
In the full game you'll get a practice mode with sample combos listed so I guess that's what he meant. Different characters can feel way different based on what kind of moves they need to chain for a combo and also which tools they have to get some damage in neutral.

This is google doc made by pro Fergus, he has written down the pros and cons of each character and play style with a brief synopsis. You might find this very useful to peruse.

Not buying into Dashfights list.
Zafina is very linear, the only thing she is bringing to the game is that movement.

If you compare it to an Established Tekken Pro's list like Knee's, Or anyone who has been around since Tekken 5 or before. Zafina barely makes it into the top 16.
Akuma, Kunimitsu, Feng, Geese Howard, Julia or Jin are all better choices.
She has less then 100 moves in her toolbox in Tekken 7.
Which is not very many when compared to the tools of other fighters on the roster.
The only Pro player to do well with her is Arslan Ash.
The last event she did well in was over 4 Months ago at a tier 2 event.
