Dungeons, lack of soundtrack, terrible cutscene animations (non pre-rendered ones), low amount of overall content, insane pricing and rushed story telling are reasons it failed.

She's one of the best parts of the game, and a huge step up over the silent schoolboys.
I too am going to go with a combination of terrible marketing (in the West atleast), awful dungeon design being the prominent talking point from every reviewer, and chopping up the obviously finished product into chunks just to be resold at it's insane regional markup was a pretty sh*tty move that shot themselves in the foot as it turns out.
I liked the game, despite it being a little too grindy. Shame they stumbled so much to ensure we probably won't see more of it.
Hope Atlus takes some lessons away from this... INB4 Persona 3 lists on steam for another 99AUD
Shin Megami Tensei 5 in it's mechanics and good starting point for newcomers.
But alot of content you can clearly tell has been cut as you can easily tell with alot of the game's story even the DLC feels incomplete except for the demi fiend one which was fun.
I feel the SMT series is used as a lab rat to test n train the staff at atlus to make persona 6 which I bet will be awesome but as someone who loves challenging rpgs and a good story, especially after i recently completed SMT 4 at the time. It made SMT5 a complete let down compared to SMT 4 which is a 3DS game with 2D and more simple 3D models. yet it had such a well done competent mature story, great challenge, and a banger of a soundtrack.
Persona franchise is main franchise now. They don't bother with SMT any more only for cash grab. I mostly love how unique demon in Sou; hacker 1.
