at least WITPAE works out of the box, despite being ancient.
Late to this thread, but I have played WitE1 & WitW extensively (new to 2) as well as WitP. WitP is far more complicated in terms of micro, but I find its micro to be more interesting than WitE. I suspect its really a different strokes situation.
The focus of WitP is naturally naval and air forces. You have a TON of mechanical upkeep to keep you navies moving. Turns take me about 30min to play out, but can take up to 2.5hrs to do turn 1! Naturally you have a ton of ships to build into fleets, planes to mange including pilot lists, training regimes, and combat operations parameters. But also the logistics are very deep, you are required to move supplies manual via convoys, ships & industry burn fuel that has to be imported, etc. All of it means you have to think about your resource availability, consumption, where you depot supplies, how youll move it from rear areas to frontline bases, and do it all in 30+45 advance of when you'll need it. All this then flows naturally into the strategic planning side of the game. You want to hold Singapore and Manilla as long as possible (or capture them as quickly as possible). So you need to bring in fuel. You also need to hold/capture Palembang ASAP for the fuel. The first 200 or so turns revolves totally around defending the fuel evac convoys, sneaking supplies into your fortress cities, and as the Japanese breaking these links rapidly while setting up Turn 200+ offensives into the South Pacific, against Australia, and into Burma/India. The Naval/Air/Supply balance works really well together, once you figure out what youre doing.
The weakness of WitP is the ground combat is very... thin. You do all this to put marines on beaches, but then after that it just feels like pools of dice rolling against each other. The side with the higher assault value typically wins, especially if they have the higher average morale. Doomstacks are thus highly effective, if you keep them supplied. This is unfortunate. Its not fatal to the game, as I think the freedom of WitP means you'll often be pitting 5:1 and 10:1 attacks against isolated defenders often. But it makes China, fully modeled, a huge slog. And if youre into the WitE/W style of ground combat, you'll really be missing it there. Conversely, I *really* miss the WitP air combat resolutions in the newer games. Its simpler, but with an even greater level of detail.
If youre bored of WitE, WitP is worth getting. Its good. And if you can break into the MP community, its a ton of fun. There are a few mods I wish were easier to get these days, but whats in the box is good.
