Level 4 Generated units
How exactly are levels 4s generated? I've seen the worst things I can imagine with only 1 side having anything on it and I've seen completely broken things. Does it roll a handful of dice for every side to determine what if anything is there and its strength?

Most recently I had a defender unit that had a 74 Shield on one side, seemed a bit excessive.

Can only imagine what the level 5 units will be.

Have 4 house cats and any other hero, enjoy the sides in the hundreds later..

It's based on analysis of the relative value of different kinds of sides, as well as HP. There's a "graph" page in the almanac (might be hidden behind an unlock) that can give you some insight into how the generation algorithm values different things. It shows for example that shields on heroes are valued lower than damage (the baseline) at low pips, and fall off further at higher pips. 1 damage is worth about 1.4 shield, and 2 damage is worth about 3–3.4 shield depending on hero tier. Ranged damage is fractionally more valuable than basic damage, and cleave damage is more than twice as valuable as basic damage.

All of the generated heroes I've seen seem a little wonky. It seems like there is a bias towards the "Gambler" or "Lazy" type build with a super-charged left side and 1-2 garbage sides and the remaining 3-4 sides blank. At least half the options I've seen end up looking like this. The custom spells though are often quite godly.

Yeah, I’ve noticed this too and it makes generate mode noticeably harder than classic because sometimes you just get no decent sides and die. There’s a reason gambler and lazy aren’t very good.
