**SPOILER** Speculation about Fern and Pucks Origin

I don't know if this is correct, but based on the early part of the game I am guessing that Fern is Pucks body that got separated from each other. I am basing this off of a comment Puck made about losing some of its memories while being experimented on. Plus, Puck also said that it lost its body as well as a result of the experiment puck was going through.

In Fern's interactions so far, I also get the feeling that Fern is acting a bit differently than expected (Maya is the main reason I think this). This leads me to believe that it is possible that Fern has issues with her memories as well.

My current theory is that either Fern was a human with Fae roots that was experimented on and was turned into a changeling, and then was experimented on further until her Fae nature was partially extracted in the form of Puck.

Alternatively, my other theory is that Fern was born as a changeling and was experimented on when she was younger and resulted in Puck being extracted from her and then later was able to rescue.

I think it's more about turning Fae into good soldiers/changelings, and having Puck as a necessary partner. It looked like, after the first boss, the fairy gave Puck the grappling hook power. I think Puck was supposed to have the power in the first place since there's not much else for him to do; unless Puck becomes more relevant/powerful in the full-game.
