My thoughts on a Nuclear Dawn 2: The Dawnening
I love Nuclear Dawn and I really want this game to thrive. I spent the past two weeks going through things that players have said and what I want to see as well. But I am going to address something first that may be controversial. So without further time wasting here is how I think we can get Nuclear Dawn 2.

Nuclear Dawn 2 development model and ownership:

Gameconnect who are the current owners of the ND IP. The updates have been getting fewer and further apart. ND has more player base than their platformer ever did. The company either needs to invest the time into a ND2 or sell the IP. If they invest into a sequel for ND2 I suggest they ask Valve to invest in their endeavour. Why? Because a lot can be learnt from Valve.
A free 2 play model would not only attract new players to the franchise but the game can make money through weapon skins and eventually class skins based on each faction. While the skins do nothing towards game play it is something that adds little flavour to an “average player” experience. CSGO sees a lot of revenue through the crate system as well having a community market also allows the players to decide the worth of the skin. This is a great segway into the next subject.

Graphics and Gameplay:

To upgrade the graphics for the game I suggest building the game with Source 2. Considering that if the company were to goto Valve for funding the development. It would be a great way to show off Source 2 and Vulkan. As well source 2 can support Linux, Windows and Mac OSX out of the gate.

When looking towards the gameplay side of ND2. Bots pathfinding and AI need to be severely adjusted and allow general players to be able to set the bot difficulty easily. CSGO again is a great example of allowing player control over bot difficulty.

Like many other games IE: Bad Company, CSGO, Battlefield and many others. To add longevity to a game and give people areas to practice and harness their skills. As well matchmaking is supported for all online game modes and is managed through the Steam software. These matches run Valve Anti-Cheat to prevent cheating. In Competitive mode, players are encouraged to act more cautiously in Nuclear Dawn than in most other multiplayer games due to the inability to respawn once killed X amount of times per squad. Each squad will have a combined 4 lives limit when playing Competitive, each player has a specific rank based on their skill level from matches and is paired up with other players around the same ranking. One form of matchmaking in Nuclear dawn 2 that would mimic CSGO to prevent cheating This feature also results in more equal matches as there are fewer "smurfs" in these matches. With that being said here are some suggested game modes that I think would compliment ND game playstyle.

  • Conquest: The classic gamemode to ND where two teams faceoff with one commander on each team fighting for resource points. Non competitive would have no death limit where as competitive woud have death limit.
  • Siege: This is a game mode made popular by the Battlefield: Bad Company series where Teams are split into Attackers, who have a limited number of respawn tickets available for the whole team, and Defenders, who have an unlimited supply of tickets available. The objective of this game mode is to arm and destroy two command centers with an explosive charge.
If the charge is placed, an alarm will go off and the charge will flash red lights, alerting the Defenders of it while it arms for thirty seconds. When the charge gets to the last few seconds of arming as it primes, the alarm will switch to a ring that raises in pitch until the charge explodes.
Once both objectives are destroyed at a base, Defenders have a few seconds to fall back to the next base, with the former effectively becoming the Attacker's new deployment.
The number of bases is different depending on the map, with at least three sets of Command Centers per map and as many as five. Once all objectives have been destroyed, or all the attacker's tickets have run out, the round ends.
The Defenders commander will receive resource points during the match based on how many control bases still in their control. The Commander will also be able to build Barricades to slow down the assault but will be limited to resource points.

  • Team Deathmatch: is played in an enclosed arena usually surrounded by an 'out of bounds' area. The goal of the game mode is to acquire the amount of kills to match the score limit and thus win the game, the score limit is set by the server and can range from 50 points to well over 500.

  • Domination: a concept made popular in ND by Steam user “another iteration” . Each teams job is to secure the primary resource and hold it for three minutes.

Commanders will have to wind down from their usual duties of structural micromanagement to a hectic mix of player micro and battlefield combat. Commanders will have the option to research and use commander abilities while in the commander chair, but they have certain buffs that make them critical to their team's success when on the battlefield.

All commanders have a "ring" of effect in which all allies within the area gain 1 HP every 0.1 seconds. Certain classes also grant effects to allies in the radius.
Assault Commanders also resupply allies within the radius with five units of all non-grenade (excluding REDs) munitions every seven seconds.
Exo Commanders grant a +200 HP boost to allies within the circle.
Stealth Commanders drain the health of enemies in the radius by 3 HP every 0.1 seconds. Additionally, the ring will disappear from view when cloaked.
Support Commanders have a significantly increased health regen rate. Instead of healing 1 HP every 0.1 seconds, Support Commanders heal 3 HP every 0.1 seconds.

That is all I have for now. I really do want a Nuclear Dawn 2 and this is a way I think it could work for fans and for newcomers.

That is perfectly understandable. The only reason I suggested the F2P model was if the project would have micro-transactions for weapon skin crates. People would be more inclined to pick it up if it was free. I do get that having a modest price also works as well then making money off of key sales or crate sales.

I would like to see more maps for ND, that seems like a more likely option than a whole new game.

@Ultimoore, I love your suggestions !!

At last, someone not only complaining, but having practical suggestions.

I think it can even work, the game is really good just unfortunate to fall between the cracks.

So with better graphics and better PR it can be a real hit!

A couple of new maps wont make them any money unless they sell it as DLC. Which would make no sense. Its more feasable to make a new game as they could make money back if not more.

Lmao thank you! I wasnt expecting anyone to support my idea. But it makes me happy that you like what I had to say. It is a wonderful game and I agree it slipped through the cracks for sure. I only hope that Gameconnect pays attention to what I am saying and Does something about it.

Ultimore, what about fundraising campaign? What do you think of Early access? Supporters will have all DLC.

The problem with fundraising and early access for a group of relative unknowns is accountability. If they did a kickstarter or early access for this. What guarantee do people get that the game would be finished? Or even be released on other platforms other than Windows? There would be none. By at least having a proper business proposal , proper development planning and money management crowd funding can work.

The safest route for everyone involved is for them to apply for funding from valve. This makes the devs accountable to someone who will take action if they try and pull anything. I am not saying the people at GameConnect would do anything bad. But I don't know enough about them to support a Kickstarter campaign. There would need to be a detailed break down of development staff , annual salary that each person needs to be paid, a realistic deadline of release, etc. But again the safest route for the developers and fans can take is to get support from Valve. Sure Valve would most likely take 30% off the top. But it gives GameConnect a chance to really make a name for themselves in the industry and make Nuclear Dawn greater than before.

If only they had kept the vehicles in the game, I am sure it would of been more popular. Instead they released "Nuclear Yawn."

FPS/RTS Hybrid is a genre that doesn't get enough love. Mostly because not enough people love it. It's amazing when you get a good synergy but painfully bad every other time.

That said, this game is giving it a go right now:
