How to force my hunter to use the bow?

Crafted this guy a perfectly good wooden bow, equip it on him, send him to hunt a deer, proceeds to beat the deers head in with a mallet while almost dying... LOL.

What did I do wrong? He even has the skill "Ranged active ability" which I used before he started fighting, but still used the hammer lmfao.
