What's the point of cursing items?

Some of the spells absolutely don't make any sense to me. Why waste resources making a spell to... intentionally curse a piece of equipment? Is it a weird risk-reward strategy where it's "cheaper" to upgrade an item with the curse spell (forgor what it's called) and deal with the curse than to just use scrolls of upgrade? I can't see any other possible use. Unless it's meant to be a joke item.

Various curses can be mitigated through certain item combinations or smart gameplay, and the curse infusion spell also significantly boosts the level of the item it is applied to. So the tradeoff is something like "Do I want this +6 item with an beneficial enchant, or a +8 item with a curse effect I can mitigate?"

I used the curse infusion to upgrade a wand so I could get more use out of the Mage's Shield Battery, since the upgrade gives it more charges.
There are other strategies you could do with it too, this is just an example.
