Porting is not as simple either as you might think, but that's beside the point - it's not what you're paying for. You're paying for these 8 years of work.
I would but sadly there's no "I'm with stupid" Steam award.

Firstly, the original Pixel Dungeon is paid on Steam. If Shattered were to be free I would be directly taking revenue from the original developer, which would hardly be fair to them.
Secondly, I want to make games as a career. In a perfect world I would happily give my work away for free but the sad truth is that I need to make money to keep making games. I don't ever intend to overcharge, and given the ~8 years of development behind Shattered I think $10 is a very fair price.
People who refuse to pay, or who aren't able to, can still get the game for free from Github as well, I don't ever intend to stop distributing there.
