Nightmare mode train speed is important

A lot of people would probably say that armor is more important than train speed but here is why that is not true.

During my run I found out that having speed level 6 and flamethrower, you can actually stun lock Charles. If you tap at a certain speed while using the flamethrower you will slow Charles enough to the point where he will not hit you once. That is, if you don't overheat your flamethrower. I found that at the speed I used it never overheated and Charles would at most get 1-2 hits on me.
So when I found out that I could sort of stun lock him with having speed of 6, damage was my priority.

I did not complete nightmare mode, I died while getting the 3rd egg. I ended up taking the wrong turn which was a dead end and the person protecting the egg got his second shot on me. If I managed to get the egg, all I had to do was go to the temple and igniate the last fight.

My upgrades was
Speed level: 6
Weapon level: Maxed
Armor level: 7
And I had around 40-50 scrap left.

I haven't tried a new run yet after I died, but might try another one today or tomorrow, but I will go for the same strat that I used before. When Eugene dies, follow the tracks to guy that has a barn, do his quest then go reverse so you can get down and get the lockpick. Do every quest on the bottom side of the map, including with the witch where you have to get the fish on the little island. It is possible to do every quest on the bottom side, except getting the egg, before you encounter Charles for the first time.
Doing this got me to level 5 speed, weapon and armor.
After that I went for the 1st egg, but only to kill the guard and get the scrap, I left the egg for later.

Then I went to start the quest for the guy at the small pier, so I knew the location for his journal. But on the way I encoutered Charles so ended up in the middle of the map with the big building with train wagons around. I started his quest instead and wanted to complete it, but Charles was so close so I wasn't able to, and I had no scrap. I then found out that in this building it is possible to cheese it a bit, meaning I could lure Charles close enough for me to fire at him. This is isn't perfect, and can still make you take damage, non the less I managed to damage him enough to leave me alone and I went to complete the quest, reverse back so I could get to the pier and after starting that quest and collecting the nearby scrap, I drove towards the top right corner to complete and start the next egg mission.
After every mission was completed and drove towards the next intersection, close to where the journal was, stopped, run and got the journal and continued to the top left corner. Again killing the guard proctecting the egg while leaving the egg there and getting the scrap. Started all the other missions, placed explosive on the bridge and drove towards the next optional NPC quest, the one where you have to do some parkour. After that going for the pickle lady, turning in the journal and then the next part was going for all the eggs.
I ignored the sniper barrel, because, flamethrower was the way to go. After collecting the 2 eggs I went for the third and unfortunately here I died shortly after getting the 3rd, cause I ended up in a dead end.

My next approach is gonna be the exact same thing. It gives a lot of scrap, with level 6 speed I could stun lock Charles, so it saved a lot of scrap in fights. But I always kept a good amount as a backup just in case the weapon would overheat and just to be save in the final boss fight. I have no idea how dangerous Charles is here, as unfortunately I didn't get to the point yet.

Nightmare mode is truly a nightmare, getting far in the game and died hurts a lot. Haven't ragequitted yet, just need to ♥♥♥♥ it up after the last time I died.

EDIT: I have now completed Nightmare mode, took me 2 attempts after this and a total of 9 attempts. I ended up going for 7 speed as that made the stun lock a lot easier. Avoiding all damage is possible, but it depends on where Charles is charging you from. If he is charging at the rear(Where you flamethrower is), when he is charging he is running faster, in order to counter this you hold down the fire button for a short amount of time, don't let it overheat. After that go back to bursting.

In the final fight you will take a good amount of damage as he will be teleporting around, if you have 40+ scrap you should be more than good. I had 7 speed, maxed weapon and 7 or 8 armor, and I used about 25-30 scrap to repair during this fight. Same method here, small burst with flamethrower, when you train health is low, you let it overheat and go repair, then back to bursting. Hardest part in my opinion is not dying trying to get 3rd egg...

If you quit to menu, the game will save. You can then backup your save manually and restore it when you die. Great for insurance against unavoidable bull-excrement deaths.
