One of my favorite games. Minimalist gameplay, great sound. Bought it twice (on Steam and mobile).

It's a cool, small game, but it's clear that it's only a stepping stone for something bigger, like somebody making a test first and then using that knowledge to make something really good.

It's not super deep, and you won't get a lot of gameplay out of it, but if you have one or two days to kill some time and just have some fun, it's a nice roguelike card game.

Super fun game, whenever I play it I just get sucked in for what feels like days.

A very solid card battler mixed with roguelike. If I was to recommend a card-based roguelike game to someone that has never tried one before, this is the title I'd go with. Several characters to choose from, each of them feeling unique, great graphics, and easy to understand gameplay. Well, yeah it took me a little bit to really get the hang of it, but I did eventually. It is really well made, the gameplay loop can easily pull you in and have you hooked on playing for awhile.

I do wish there was another way to unlock the characters as opposed to beating the correct area with the previous character, as that's a method that kind've sucks if you really don't want to play as one of the characters. Because each character plays a bit differently, it isn't like you're learning skills as one character you'll be able to bring over to the next.

Anyway, it's a good game. Very enjoyable roguelike, definitely recommended.

Simple but incredibly effective mechanics to deliver dopamine straight to the brain. Perfect also on mobile. Eager to see what this studio does next, as they clearly know how to make good games.

It's a pretty unique rougelike with a slower yet still quick feeling loop. Content can feel limited after enough runs, but the real replayability comes from the different characters you can choose from, each of which having different starting items, abilities, and perks.

This is one of these games that lure you in with a short game just to keep you glued to the screen way longer than you intended.

Wow, it's been a while since I've been so immediately impressed by a game like I have been by Forward: Escape the Fold.

F:EtF is a delightful little dungeon-crawling roguelite RPG where cards are used to represent all the good stuff you'd expect to find in an RPG. The player character, monsters, coins, items, potions, even shops and chests... the essence of all of these RPG staples is boiled down into card form and arranged in three columns, through which you'll chart your path to optimize healing, fighting, and looting. The game is extremely simple in this regard -- you're mostly just choosing which card to go to next, plus potentially using your character's active ability -- but game-changing loot will constantly make you reassess your choices. Just this past run, I had an item that healed me at when starting a level and an item that made walking into poison traps trigger any items that activate at the start of a level: this combination essentially made poison into a healing mechanics, a very clever and satisfying inversion of the game mechanics. There are many of these combinations in the game, and most all items stack, so you can really crank out some good stuff.

I'll also note: while there are some other good games out there that use this sort of "everything is a card" mechanic, like Right & Down, I believe Two Tiny Dice actually pioneered this concept with their mobile game Endless Cards (a game I have also spent many hours playing). This whole system is really fantastic, and I'd love to see more games like it. It seems like Two Tiny Dice is actually making a new game, Pyrene, that uses this system, and I can't wait to see this weird deckbuilding-subgenre grow.

At any rate, though, Forward: Escape the Fold is a really fun game. It's perfect to pick up and play given its relative simplicity and its short runs. It also has fantastic pixel art, great sound design, and an overall old-school TTRPG feel that give off an excellent atmosphere. Do yourself a favor and pick the game up!

A final note: I've been playing on Steam Deck, and F:EtF is a perfect on-the-go game. While you will have to use the trackpads to simulate a mouse (no controller support), the "Right Click to Move" option in settings makes playing very easy: just mouse over the card you want to move to and use the left trigger to move there.
