What's the deal with all these "try patience" messages?

These "try patience" messages are littered everywhere. It's absurd how many there are. Some of them even have double-digit upvotes. Clearly, I'm not getting something.

Do the people putting them down think that they're actually being helpful? Because they're not. If they wanna warn players about an ambush or other danger, then give some kind of detail about what it is or where it's coming from. Otherwise it's just generally saying "be cautious", which is completely pointless because anyone who plays more than an hour of this game learns to expect an ambush around every corner. And most of the time the messages aren't even placed anywhere near danger.

Is this some kind of inside joke? I can't find anyone talking about it anywhere, so it's probably not a coordinated effort. Which is baffling, considering how many of them there are. Maybe it's a self-perpetuating meme, like "don't give up, skeleton!"? But that joke is actually funny at face-value, so people have a reason to re-use it.

My best guess is that it's some kind of troll. But even that's a pathetically weak motivation. All they're doing is briefly evoking an extremely lukewarm feeling of irritation and confusion. They're just making the game slightly worse by drowning out all of the useful/funny messages.

I've just been downvoting all of them. I can't imagine any possible explanation that would make me regret that decision.

I was a little irritated by those too.

I do wonder whether it's just some confusion over using it.
Messages are used like a spell/source, so perhaps people don't get they're leaving a message and are just trying to figure out what the spell does?
'Try Patience' is the default if you don't change any options, which leads me to believe it's not some intentional joke.

Or perhaps there's an achievement linked to leaving a message or something, so people are just doing the default?

lol yeah I think "try patience" is the default so some people have been spamming them.

I haven't done a full playthrough of the game for a little while, so I should probably scan through them. if people are abusing our system to place junk, perging them from the server could be needed.

it's a shame - any time you create any kind of User Generated Content, you're going to get a small percentage of players who abuse the system.

Either that or it's a sort of inside joke. if a thing appears commonly enough I suppose it becomes a sort of meme.

It wasn't too disruptive, but did give me the impression I was either missing something, or people were just trying the item for the first time, so were leaving the default not realising what they were doing.
Didn't sour the fun of the good messages though :)

Though in the prequel 'Penultimate Hero of Nostalgaia' I will be expecting a boss called Try Patience that throws projectile messages at you.

Hot damn. I never would have expected a dev to give a response to a silly little concern like this. Feels great to see that kind of attention.

The fact that it's the default message is probably why they're placing that message in particular. But I don't quite buy that it's the reason why they're placing it. These things are everywhere, including late-game areas. I think they might be even more common as the game progresses. Someone just testing it would have figured out how it works immediately. If they put it in their hotbar and they've been using it accidentally, then they eventually would have gotten frustrated and removed it.

I haven't checked, but is there a limit on the number of messages one player can place? If so, this could, theoretically, mostly be the work of one very petty troll with extremely low standards for what they consider 'trolling'.

Otherwise, I guess I'm now leaning towards the self-perpetuating meme explanation, of people assuming there's some kind of deeper meaning to it. That's one good reason to nip it in the bud and purge them. I really appreciate you considering that option, and I applaud you for having the foresight to implement that kind of tool. I guess that you were concerned players might somehow come up with a message that's way more offensive than "try finger but hole". But I'll understand if you decide not to use that option, especially if it would take a significant amount of time.

It's really not that deep, try patience is the default, so it's quick and easy to spam everywhere and thus became a meme. It's this game's "don't give up, skeleton". No reason at all to remove such messages, that would just make the game less fun.

i was wondering about it alot on the beginning too, its def because its the default message, but i still couldnt understand why there were so many ( i mean it grows old after a while) HOWEVER i" lost connection to server" at some point in game, and to see if i was back online on server, i tried posting a message "Try patience" (because its the fastest to type), and it kept saying "you lost connection" each time and that i couldnt post the message, until it suddenly wrote the message, and then i knew i was back on server.. SO im thinking now, if other people do the same, and the messages ACTUALLY get written once you are back on server, that would explain the insane amount of " Try patience" messages. when this is said I LOVE the game and I LOVE the messages (like good old DS) and i spend alot of time in game writing helpful messages, so i hope this feature will stay, and the problem can be solved in some way. i think with THIS ONE its not trolling or people abusing the system for that matter, but who knows in this day and age.. once again LOVE the game! Keep up the good work, and dont give up skeleton!
