I'm pretty sure the devs are considering alternate ways to obtain salt, like being able to gather ocean water, then evaporate it, or something similar.
I'm sure it can be found in other places, but I haven't found it yet.
I've found salt once or twice at a grocery store... but yes, mostly in cupboards in houses.
If you know where the house for the easy start is located, there's a salt node right across the road from it, on the beach.
Rocksalt mining nodes look similar to Saltpeter nodes, but with thicker white lines through the rock. Once you know what to look for, you can usually spot a Rocksalt node pretty easy. I'm sure there are more, but I think I've found 2 Rocksalt nodes so far, maybe 3. I can't remember exactly. :)
