is there an opportunity to upgrade skills and increase the amount of stamina? Endurance is very lacking in complex settings.

Best advice I got is to manage your gear's weight. Try to pack light, having your inventory full of stuff considerably slows you down. Also, using 2 handed weapons takes more stamina than one-handed.
