stone, then scrap and sheet metal

Spent 2 hours looking for 4 stones, so I could build the campfire. It's a bit weird that basic rocks/stones are so super duper rare. Maybe the zombies ate them all.

Anyway, after finding the stones (yay) it seems pretty much every item you can build requires sheet or scrap metal. Some threads state you can use the axe to demolish cars, but that didn't seem to work. Is sledgehammer the only way to do so? I spent a fair exploring the map but have not seen any sledgehammers. any other way to get sheet metal? I tried attacking/scrapping cars and fences and houses and pretty much everything else that looks metal-ish to no avail

You can actually use most of the blunt weapons to destroy cars, they have to be the ones with open doors that cant be looted afaik.

Stones mostly spawn in residential zones right now, like around houses. Destroy cars that are damaged looking and with open doors for 4 sheet metal, scrap, and possibly a car part if youre lucky.
