Junk speed
Just upgraded to the Junk and set sail for Sage Hills my usual trip from Dragon Cliffs. As usual i slept whilst on course. When I woke up I'd gone right past Sage as it was in the distance behind me.
Is the Junk that much faster than the starter ship as it sure doesn't feel like it?!

big ships are 50% faster than their small brothers and the 3MJ is the fastest of all...

Thanks!
if you get a speedmeter you can divide the distanse with speed and find the hours you need to reach destination but in our game (idk why, maybe a bug?) we need twice the time lol...

Yeah not got one yet.

that's one way of saying it.

small ships, the starters, top out around 5 knots. the medium ships, the ones you buy in each capitol, they have a minimum speed of ~5 knots, and a maximum speed of ~12 knots.

Really doesn't seem it visually. Deceiving I suppose as the boat is much bigger

you need to compaire them in same conditions, the dhaw in storm in the ocean with storm from behind can get 8 knots and the Sunbuq 12 so its +50% and in archipelago 5,5 and 8 so again its +50% or the time they need to cover same distanse. thats how science works, your example is how trolling works...

from what i understand, a dhow in the open ocean in a storm is going to sink, not sail.

i've personally never seen a starter ship maintain more than 5 knots. sure, you'll get little "bursts," especially if the wind and waves are strong enough to throw the business end of the chip log into the air.

if you want to call that trolling, feel free. "provoking a response" was not my intention, so i do not see myself as trolling.
with wind from behind the dhow can reach 8 knots in a storm and its not sinking, i 've gone to DC and then to aestrin with the dhow, the second starting ship is sinking in the ocean, at least under my command lol

In real life, a boats potential speed is determined by complicated maths, but as a general rule the longer and skinnier the boat the faster it goes.
The junk is not the longest, but it is the thinnest for its length.
I also think it is generally faster as the junk rig in terms of the game is good all around.
Lateen is best at upwind but bad downwind.
Square is best for downwind, but bad at up wind.
Gaff is best at across the wind, but bad going up or down.
Junk is good at all wind angles, but not best at any. So I think it tends to be faster by just being good in all situations.
A jack of all winds, master of none sail. Which is why I like it best. And it looks cool.

The 3MJ (3 masted Junk) has the biggest sail-to-drag ratio, that's why.
The default 3MJ has a total sail area of 208, but can be upgraded to 400+, now THAT's speed. (I'm using one right now)

What sail plan do you use Boris? Is it the same as you've posted in the ship config discussion?
I've recently given the 3MJ a go, but I find it constantly heels too much in little wind even when not loaded to the maximum. I plan to sail it to GRC as to rig it out with lateen sails on three masts, which is from memory what has been previously posted to the other discussion.
Cheers.

Casual Navigation, a YT channel, has a good video explaining why larger hulls will have a greater speed than smaller.

EDIT: Bonus video specifically discussing sailboat hull speed.

Great videos from that fella, I've watched them for a while. Plenty of fascinating subjects they cover!

Yes it's the same one.
Yes 3MJ heels a lot after the recent sail power buff, something that I already reported in the announcement thread so that Lion would see it.
Still, 3MJ in that configuration goes really fast, even though you need to be careful about furling up one or two sails especially when you are going to sleep.
