Sailwind

Sailwind

Which Large (Medium Class) ship should I buy?
As someone who is still relatively new to the game, and who has recently completed a full round-trip from GRC to the emerald archipelago in the dhow, which large ship should I aim for?

I cant find any details on the ships handling (other than the sanbuq using sail-assisted turning) aside from the default sail rig (lateen vs square vs junk sail).

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

sanbuq is very easy and was what i went with first, has plenty of cargo space, doesnt take on water as much. its great if you just want to set a straight course instead of tacking as its the best going upwind due to the large dhow sails, this is especially useful if youre not that confident in ocean navigation yet, as long as you roughly hold course youll have a hard time getting lost. this also means you wont get crazy speeds downwind though, but i havent found that to be an issue. add a bowsprit and staysails, maybe an extended mast with a square topsail and youll have a fast and versatile ship that doesnt cost an arm and a leg to buy and upgrade.

i skipped the junk so i cant really comment on it other than that its cargo space seemed severely lacking, especially if you want to haul large items like sculptures, and from what ive heard online it takes on water as quickly as the brig without the brigs upside of having a lot of cargo capacity.

im currently using the brig and having a great time, tho it is definitely not as beginner friendly as the sanbuq. id recommend it as your "late-game" option because it has tons of space for your amenities and decorations, has a crazy amount of good rigging options, huge cargo space and weight capacity but a lot more sails to manage, and also really likes to take on water, i was never even close to capsizing with the sanbuq but had a few really close calls with the brig. i turned it into a schooner which makes it much better upwind than the default layout but im still not reaching the speeds of my sanbuq, granted i carry a LOT more stuff with me most of the time. also keep in mind its a fair bit more expensive, especially if you dont like its default layout youll be spending thousands more to modify it.

i recommend picking the sanbuq first and moving on to the brig later once you have more money than you know what to do with, but at that point you may as well try them all and see whats most fun to sail for you.

Thanks for the info, I will aim for the sanbuq first (I'm rather close to getting it too)

Sanbuq:

Carrying capacity -- medium (~8000 units)
Stability -- very stable
Hull speed -- ~12 knots
Sailing difficulty -- very easy
Maximum # of masts -- 2

I love the Sanbuq, I've tried a lot of rig types. It's extremely stable and easy to maneuver and has decent cargo space and speed.

Junk:

Carrying capacity -- low (~5000 units)
Stability -- low, especially with cargo
Hull speed -- ~14 knots
Sailing difficulty -- medium
Maximum # of masts -- 3

The Junk is very fast and nimble but quite cramped and has low cargo capacity. I'm personally not a huge fan, but boy does it go fast.

Brig:

Carrying capacity -- high (~15000 units)
Stability -- medium, especially when loaded
Hull speed ~~ 13 knots(?)
Sailing difficulty -- high
Maximum # of masts -- 3

The Brig is BIG. It's long, roomy and can carry a lot of cargo without losing speed. Its main disadvantage is that it's very complicated to sail and it's prone to taking water.

All three ships can be configured with various sail plans, so they're quite customisable and you can turn them into anything you like. Maneuverability and such depends heavily on the sail plan.

I personally like the Sanbuq best -- it's cheap, easy to sail, decently fast with good cargo space.

PS: There'll be a new 4-masted Junk released very soon (a matter of days). It's *huge* and possibly very fast.

thanks for the information - I wish there was a table like that on the wiki. also that new ship sounds really interesting - will it be on the beta or stable branch?
