i've got my compass sitting on the railing right by the wheel. it was a pain to drop it just so, but it pays in spades.
I tried to place the compass there too. I did not make it :) Kudos to you!!!

Also, square-riggers are simply a must. You can have all kinds of fancy boats in your inventory, but it absolutely needs to have a Brig as well.
the wind had to be blowing down my teeth to stop me, and i maintain a speed of 8-12 knots. if i'm below 8, it's because some portion of my sails are crossing over into the deadzone. usually a quick fix in changing heading a couple of degrees, or resetting the sails, depending on how bad it is.
i couldn't get her to move forward even with a jib out.
i let her reverse her way back to the ship customizer and put the old sails back on lol.
i have way too much to learn about how sails work.
i couldn't even get the squares to go straight bow to stern. they barely wanted to move from straight across the hull lol.
how you guys have 300 sails on those ships is beyond me lol.
For sambuq my current config is
biggst jib you can find (IIRC 109+47)
10yd fin sail (217)
9yd fin sail (126-ish I think?)
trapezodial top sail on top mast (94~110 I forgot)
Can reach 13kt at optimum conditions, usually sails at 10 ~11 kt regardless of wind direction.
the deck boards seam helps to get it nice and straight.
