Three mast'd brig ideas?
I am debating the possibility of converting my brig from two masts to three masts. Though, I am not entirely sure what sail plan I should do. Has anybody here has done some experimenting with the three mast config and found something that works, at least to serve as a baseline for my build? I am looking to preserve its colonial styling, so I will be sticking with Aestrin sails.

They discuss it in Discord, they have many sail plans

Personally I think it's interesting to have a frigate with square sails on all the 3 masts, so
that you capitalise on trade winds when crossing the ocean

Could always try a Xebec

It's hard to do a good Xebec because the mizzen shroud (on the Brig) is not customizable and interferes with the rear lateen. It's doable but the rear lateen will have odd angle restrictions that you can't really do anything about.

My current Brig setup does have 3 lateens (12 yard in front, 15 yard each for main and mizzen mast), square sails above the lateens, an 18 yard jib on the front and a 14 yard staysail between the foremast and main mast. It works well in all wind conditions, although it is a lot of sheet to manage if you aren't used to complex setups.

Well then do a really simple search on google for "Brig Sailplan" will show you a very large number of technical sailplan drawing of brig's a few have 3 masts.

Since default Sanbuq has illegal sails, and we have save editor, there is high chance you could just edit the angles on the lateen and it would work with wrong mast.

Not a perfect solution but just giving an idea, it would probably allow for other illegal but realistic looking configurations.

I think I found a formula that works for the 3-mast. Since I had the money to do so, I did the all-squares route, 2 squares on the fore and main mast, and 1 square and a gaff spanker on the mizzen. Between each mast I put staysails plus 2 head sails and a spritsail on the extended bowsprit. My new "colonial clipper," as I like to call her, does surprisingly well on all points of sail, even close hauled as near as 40 degrees. I am at sea right now, I'll buy a chip log next time I am at port and clock my ship.
