I know turning it "off and back on" is the most basic of troubleshooting, but, any IT service rep will tell you, most people don't do it. If devs can make it so that game restart isn't necessary, or at least walk users through getting their controllers to work, you'll keep more players. The dev (rdw2ts) that simply said "it works" and they were playing with a controller didn't help me get to experience a game that I'm willing to spend money on. A random steam user helped me.
FYI, my original prob wasn't for lack of turning it off / on... Until the last year I have always used consoles and honestly I still avoid action games where controller isn't an option. I didn't realize I could enable some "non-supported" games to function with a controller by messing with properties and rebinding inputs (today I learned).
