The combat is turning me off of the game completely
I really don't care for the combat in these kinds of games just the exploration and puzzles, but general enemy readability and the way they just fly at you full speed all the time is really killing my enjoyment of the game.

I want to explore but taking 20+ hits to kill Zombies and Knights or whatever the hell I'm on is just NOT fun.

I understand the idea of baiting the crocs because they only move vertically and horizontally but you can't really do this in the shallow water in that little boss arena in the south east. Not to mention how many hits he takes to kill.

This is completely an issue within the game's intentional clunkiness and how fast the enemies move across the screen.

I don't think I've ever played a game where I take so many stray hits from unreadable enemies.

If you're taking 20+ hits to kill Zombies, you probably don't need to be in that area yet. There's a lot of upgrades that make killing these guys (and other frustrating enemies) easier to deal with.
There was only one or two instances where I had a very frustrating fight to deal with and there were no upgrades I could get to make it easier.

I'm not too far into the game, but I have to agree the combat is reducing my enjoyment. Well, that coupled with the checkpointing system.

I beat the first dungeon with the "hook shot" and I'm in the mini-dungeon(?) in the dark woods with the cyclops with the ball and chain, and I'm stuck. I don't know if I've almost beat him or I'm nowhere near beating him. I have the boots (which seem to speed me up a little), but the movement is still pretty clunky, and there isn't much room for movement and I have no dodge ability and no way to tell if he's nearly dead or I'm not even close to beating him. And every time I die, I have to make the long journey back to that dungeon (I opened the shortcut, but still, it's annoying.) oh, and don't get me started on that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ravens in the woods that dive-bomb me when I'm trying to get back.

I dunno, maybe you can gain a dodge mechanic at some point, but this battle is making me want to stop playing, which is a shame, since the non-combat part of the game seems first rate.

I'd have to agree. This game has alot of great things going for it, but in general, the enemies are far too sponge-y. It feels like enemies take about 3x more damage to kill than they need to, and that is further exacerbated by way they aren't knocked back, but the player is. It feels very backwards from most games, and counter-intuitive.

Me too and I haven't played the demo far... Doesn't feel good as it is not that responsive, has non intuitive hitboxes and the enemies can be really spongey.
Won't buy it because of this unfortunately and I love Link's Awakening :/

On normal mode and even with the ultimate weapon, the final boss took ages to go down... It's like smashing your attack button for 5 minutes straight. There is no fun here

Just turn down the difficulty to its lowest level. The enjoyment is all in the puzzles anyway. Also even at the lowest difficulty end game enemies are still crazy tanky so you might as well do it.

Went to store page to buy the game but glad I decided to check see what the community was saying and specifically if it runs well on steam deck. From a review I read, I inferred it does but reading how the enemies are damage sponges even on lowest difficulty is a major turn off and I guess I’ll wait for a patch or a huge sale. I would prefer pay full ask and have it patched

I'd say play the demo for yourself. I've played it on steam Deck and had no issues running it so far. But as mentioned above, I haven't played so long.

Edit: the difficulty slider isn't in the demo unfortunately.. maybe it's still hidden as a color palette

Also: nice avatar picture xD

While this is true that some ennemies in this game are pretty tanky, please keep in mind that you can buy multiple attack upgrades pretty early into the game. Using your tools is a good way to deal damage while keeping a good distance in difficult fights, and finally don't hesitate to buy healing items from the shop, money is everywhere in this game and you'll probably have more than you'll ever need by the end of the game .

Also, like Adam said above, in most cases if you struggle too much in an area it's probably because you are not supposed to be fighting there with your current gear.

Same here, I wish the combat and movement felt more like A Link to the Past, where you can move while attacking. Something about the combat feels like glue, would love the game if the combat felt more fluid.

Agreed, love everything else about the game but the combat is just a slog to go through, even on the lowest difficulty.

Feels like every time I try to space a hit I do barely any knock back damage and get hit anyways with the follow-up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I almost rage quit just now fighting those 3 stone heads in the hookshot temple. It would be ok if I wasn't also CONSTANTLY fighting the controls as well as whatever enemies are on screen.

I was one of the few that didn't mind it, until the final boss anyway. I hate when there is a wall stopping you from completing a game. I've thrown a good 8 attempts at them, each of which can take 15 minutes and I just can't get through the 4th boss stage (however many there are). A shame as its completely soured such a fun experience

I did not realize there was a difficulty option. I was about to put the game down indefinitely before I learned this, and after setting it down one notch, I've been enjoying the game 3 times as much. But it does expose the extent to which the combat and enemy design just does not feel right.
