For this game in particular an arcade style controller is actually the recommended control method. This is a port of AFT the actual arcade game (and as someone who’s played on arcade believe me it’s much better played that way). Gamepad and keyboard are both fine ways to play alternatively, although if OP plans to try other DIVA games then gamepad with ps symbols would be the best way to play. For this game in particular though because of the macros, keyboard would be the best way to play since you can map multiple macros to your keyboard.
TLDR the game was designed for arcade controllers but keyboard and gamepad both work fine, pick whichever one you’re more comfortable with
Arcade game is an adaptation of the project diva games from PSP that were prior to the existence of any arcade and which control method was... controller, so the original and true method to play project divas is controller. Obviously in a arcade machine they wont put a controller, arcades uses buttons.
I dont know about macros because never used them, but i suppose is completely fine to use them with controllers, if that werent the case they didnt launch the game originally on PS4 or switch.
I respectfully disagree. PDA/PDAFT is in fact adaptation of first PD series but with modified beatmaps to fit specifically designed arcade buttons controller. That's why there's no double arrows and tapes are changed to holds. Mega39s/+ is port of AFT/(PS4)FT so originally it should be played with PD hori controller. Also, the way how buttons are placed in songs are hints that it's for arcade buttons (Examples of screenlayouts):
[△---□---×---〇]
[..........□-------〇]
[△-------×...........]
[△------------〇]
[.........□................]
|''''''/.....\..............|
[...△-----×..........]
or in hardersongs it may look like that:
[...............................△..........△]
|''''''''''''''''''''''□ □..|...... □ □|
|'''''×......×...... |...|...|...× × × |
[〇〇〇〇〇〇〇〇〇〇〇]
But all above doesn't change the fact that many people use gamepad-type controller because of macros and (probably because of) rapid/spam notes.
