Project diva future tone and Project diva mega mix are different games, they aren't connected other than being apart of the same series. Future tone actually has more content than Mega mix so I'd recommend trying that game out first.
As for Future Tone, while it DOES have the same song list as Mega Mix, a good chunk of them are sold in DLC packs. In fact, the Mega Mix-exclusive songs were backported to Future Tone in two packs. ($15 and $10 USD, respectively.)
Let me put it this way: If the total cost of Future Tone's DLC is more than $24 USD (assuming you haven't bought any yet), you're better off getting Mega Mix VIP Edition while it's on sale. You'll get everything + mod support, like songs from Project Diva X and F 2nd.
