How to access multiplayer?

Just got this for me and a friend - local co-op - but I can't figure out how to access the multiplayer room to the right. I'm new to the game. How do I initiate multiplayer local co-op game?

You have to have them on your Steam friendslist and when you go east (right) in the lobby talk to the owl and open up a match, then you can right click on the friends list to invite, or they can just join up on you the same way by right clicking your name and clicking join.
